No replies to my first post so......
I recently purchased a few Magpul 10 and 20 round 7.62 x 51 GEN M3 magazines for my DPMS G2 rifle. I was aware of the bolt hold open issues prior to the purchase. Sure enough, the follower does not push the bolt latch up as far as I'd like it to. This causes the bolt stop to get dinged up pretty bad because of the minimal bolt lug engagement and eventually the latch will fail to hold the bolt open. I researched the forum and someone came up with a fix. I experimented on (1) magazine and solved that problem by removing a bit of material off the entire length of the top right corner of the follower where it contacts the right feed lip. This allows the follower to come up just a bit more. Great! Easy fix and does no harm to the follower.
Another discovery- while feeding from the magazine there is very minimal bolt lug engagement on the cartridge case head. While it works for now, I am concerned about possible "bolt-over-cartridge" malfunctions. No... I have heard no reports of bolt-over misfeeds so maybe I'm just overly cautious. When feeding from the right side there is just barely, and I do mean barely enough bolt lug engagement to push the cartridge forward. The left side feeding is just a tad better but still not enough for me to be comfortable with. I see the issue being the thickness of the feed lips and the magazine not sitting high (deep) enough in the receiver. Thinning the feed lips would be a no-go and the magazine cannot sit any higher due to the rifle's geometry. The magazine is fully into the rifle when latched in place so moving the latch detent location would not work.
Can this magazine be improved/modified for use with the G2 rifles without causing potential issues with Gen 1 rifles? I don't know but DPMS factory steel magazines allow the cartridges to sit higher so there is ample bolt engagement on the case head when feeding and the follower pushes the bolt latch up just fine. However, the factory followers in my opinion are somewhat lacking. They are made of soft plastic and are deformed by the pressure of the spring even when not in use. Has Magpul considered offering their great no-tilt followers and springs for these magazines? I think this is possible. One could envision Magpul followers as standard equipment in DPMS magazines and many, many more to be sold to people like me to replace the factory magazine followers already in use. Anyone out there have any thought on this?
