http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f166/s34ntx/MidLength_zps1uzm9kir.jpg Round retainer caps only is a disappointment, but I'll take an easy guess as to why that is. According to Magpul's website, the maximum width of the MOE SL is 1.8" and I'd guess that would be at the midpoint, parallel to the barrel. According to the calipers I have, my BCM Middy's triangular retaining cap is 1.705 near the bottom, right where the MOE SL would start to curve under the barrel. So unless they wanted to make a finger-burning cutout or make the Middy version of the SL much less SL, I think we're out of luck. Anybody see a big negative to swapping out the retaining cap for a round one? I still want to fit these handguards. View Quote What annoys me is that these really aren't "drop in" If im going to the trouble of swapping out the cap, id just free float the barrel. I have never seen a factory middy with a round cap |

WHAT THE HELL MAGPUL ... after all this time, and they're round? *weeping*

I don't know why people didn't see this coming. The carbine version said round only too. It's not like they were going to dramatically change them to work with the triangle caps.

My midlength has the round cap. Will definitely get one of these in stealth grey.
Thanks Magpul. |

The defacto standard for mid length rifles is the triangle hand guard cap. About 80% of mid length rifles has a triangle hand guard cap. This is going to piss off a LOT of people. Magpul / Magpul dealers are going to be up to their ears and eyeballs in returns of this hand guard because most people dont realize there is a difference.
Magpul needs to get out in front of this ASAP as this has the potential to really spiral out of control. This small note is mentioned on the Magpul website: *NOTE: The Mid-Length MOE SL Hand Guard is a direct replacement for most factory plastic, two-piece, mid-length hand guards and utilizes the existing ROUND front hand guard retaining cap and spring-loaded delta ring. Must be used with A2 front sight assembly; triangular retaining caps and other gas blocks are not compatible Most? MOST? MOST??!! How in the heck does this hand guard fit MOST factory mid-lengths??!! This handguard will fit 20% of mid lengths on the market, not MOST OF THEM. What a freaking joke. This is going to be the biggest FAIL in Magpul history. Honestly, there needs to be a huge disclaimer on Magpul's website in big red letters stating, " This handguard has an 80% chance of not fitting your mid length rifle. Please make sure that your rifle is non-standard with a round retainer before buying this hand gaurd." Magpul should also post pictures on their website of round vs triangle caps as many people won't know the difference and wont know how to spot the difference. |

S&W has sold a lot of mid moe's with round caps. They'll sell a few to those owners.

Here's the deal...A triangular cap won't fit inside a MOE SL hand guard. Can't get in there, as shown with the calipers earlier. Yes, there are some folks that still use triangle caps for mid-length formats. There are a ton of rifles out there with round ones, including many OEMs, (especially when you consider numbers of rifles produced) and apart from tradition, no real reason to use a triangle cap. It is what it is, and you can't put two solid objects in the same place, so round is the only fitment that works without altering the interface in a manner that was unacceptable to us in the design process--the front flange of the handguard would have to become bulbous, extended, and less of what the MOE SL is supposed to be.
We talked to our OEMs before going down this road. I can understand if there's some disappointment from those with triangle caps, but it's really not that hard to swap them out. Certainly not as easy as installing a hand guard, but that's why we tried to be extra clear about needing the round cap in the instructions and literature. We think the MOE SL hand guard format is worth it. Thanks for being engaged, and we do consider all customer feedback as important. |

I'm glad they put 4 slots in the mid length this time instead of 3 like the MOE. That always threw me off and I hated the way it looked.
|
|
That looks great on the S&W Mid Moe. Does the fourth slot go as far forward as on the Moe? I have a WML on a cantilever mount and want it as close to the end as possible. It's kind of hard to tell with the FSB covered.
|
|
$3 for a round hand guard cap, $3 for a new crush washer, punch the 2 FSB pins out, and bam, new Magpul SL mid length hand guard.
Ill be getting one. Hurry up with the other colors Magpul! |

Pinned muzzle device. Yeah, sucks for the pinned and welded 14.5/14.7" guys, but most folks have 16" barrels. I'm not too happy that I have to remove the triangle cap, and replace it with a round one, but I like the SL handguards more than the first gen MOE. |

Why would they design it to use a round cap? Round for carbine, Triangle for rifle, and MOSTLY (I've had some that used round) triangle for Mid. Why didn't they make it fit BOTH (as the MOE does)? They're going to have to redesign it to use triangle, anyway, when they get to the rifle length. Huge oversight??

So I'm guessing they'll do the rifle length like the mid length, and make it compatible with the round handguard caps only. Not too many pinned 20" uppers out there (except for the NJ guys). |

Is there a video out there on how to switch from triangle to round caps for a 16" mid length?

Is there a video out there on how to switch from triangle to round caps for a 16" mid length? View Quote Look at any video about removing the A2 front sight post. Lots of videos out there about people removing them to put FF rails on. You are going to have to remove your muzzle device. Drive out your two A2's tapper pins. (easier said then done) Pull the A2 off the barrel. Optional to leave the gas tube pinned to the A2 or remove it (pray that it comes off the barrel easy, if its gonna take twisting, unpin the gas tube) Switch the cap. Do everything in reverse. Anyone know of a place that has them in stock in FDE? I'm giving in and switching the cap on my wife's build But now they seem out of stock everywhere, or not even added yet at many retailers. |

I have been breathlessly awaiting these in either mid or rifle with the intent of buying an upper for them.
does anyone know if there is an outside the box solution? Like cutting the ends off of the triangle caps just enough to fit? If so I'm still down |

I ordered a handguard from Brownells and I should be getting it by the end of this week. It doesn't bother me that much that I also had to order a round cap together with the handguard for it to work. I already took out the triangle one. It took me a few hard hits but it came out easy. The good thing was I had the FH hand tight. Been waiting for this since the carbine version was released. The only down side is this build is going towards my wife.

As soon as I found out that it required a "non standard" round HG cap (midlenth) it was a "forget that" item.

Just spent an hour trying to install a mid-length SL handguard.
Bottom section will not clear the delta ring. (Before you ask, yes, I've done this many times before in building and maintaining AR's.) |

I found getting the lip that goes into end cap fully inserted on the lower section to be a bit of a pia, but once it was, the delta ring end was no problem.

IIRC, you can look through the 6:00 MLok slot and see if the lower half is fully seating in the retaining cap at the FSB. Only then do you pull the Delta ring. |
