I lost my father on 08-25-2008. He served in the US Air Force at Dyess AFB, 819 Medical Group SAC, in Abilene, TX during 1966 to 1970. I have a copy of his DD214 and I am trying to assemble a shadow box of several items from his military service. I am the only one in my family that is interested in this and could use some help.

Not so fast on the insurance being "out of force"!  He had the option to convert his SGLI when he separated.  Get his death certificate, DD214 (which has his service number/social security number), and call the VA.  They can get you in touch with whoever handles the insurance.
