Hey everyone, I had a grandfather that served in WW2 but was always very very quiet about his service. Being my families only military historian I did a little digging on my own and found some basic stuff about getting copies of his records and wanted to share what I have found out with you all.

If your next of kin you can ask for the records online.
https://vetrecs.archives.gov/VeteranRequest/home.html

If your not next of kin, you'll need to fill out the form 180 and either fax or mail it. Here is a link to the form to send in.
https://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/standard-form-180.html

It's worth noting that there is an apparent cutoff for records regarding privacy, and that if the service member served within the last 62 years privacy rules apply, however if it was longer then 62 years ago you can request the records as a public record.

If anyone sees a place where i can insert more helpful information in the OP let me know and I'll plug it in.
