to remember when one of these was one of the most important items in your kit?

I recall many occasions of being huddled under a poncho in the woods/jungle/tundra trying to read a map.

Yes, we had those too, but when you're carrying everything you need for a 2 week mission, weight gets to be a serious consideration. We left those lights at home and opted for the little pilot pen lights.  They even had a red lens on them.

Don't think I've ever seen one of those

How old do you have to be?  I was Army from 1969 to 1971, and I never saw one of those.

Well, I spent 10 years in SF, all the guys on my team had one, and most of the guys in the other teams in our company had them.

May have been just an SF thing.

I had one.  It was big time neato gear when I was in 1/75, 86' to 90'.  Long gone now.

Once that MiniMag hit the market, most used it instead of that little pilot issue gem.

Yes, that Mini Mag was the bees knees and lasted until the early Surefire's came out.

We'd take the IR lense for a crook nect, cut it down for use with the MiniMag colored filter adaptor, tape the MiniMag to front of the hand guard of an M16A2 at either 10 or 2 o'clock, clip on the 5's, then shortly later the 7A's, and kick doors!

Lot handier than lugging around, and mounting the early PAQ-4A to the side of carry handle.

Is that the one that the bulb gets up to like 84 million degrees on and melts the laminate on your map, or burns the fuck out of your finger?
Link Posted: 6/24/2015 8:16:44 PM EDT
[#14]
No, actually with its 2 AA batteries, it barely put out enough light to read the map.

The one I had was a 2 aa too,

Come to think of it mine had the luminous green tip around the bulb, other than that it was the same

Has the military moved to an LED fleshlight yet?  Flashlights have evolved a lot since the GWOT started.

Nope, still angle neck

They basically expect you to provide your own flashlight after you get out of basic

Yep.  But really only need them for staff duty nights.  Not much call for a flashlight in PPT briefings about SHARP, EO, trannies and what not.

I'm a Marine.  We have extraordinary minds and better kit than the Army.

We could read by flickering lighter.

I had a Civilian Version... I bought it after seeing My Brother's......

He was using His GI Bill, while on AD, to get His Commercial Pilots Ticket..

The light was part of the gear He bought.... I think it was a Copy of a Military one.....

It had a different Head on it, could be switched between Red, Green, or White Light......

They make a Standard Flashlight Bulb replacement in LED.....

It's more shock resistant than a regular bulb...
