I participated in Operation Golden Saber 1, 1988 just outside of Venice Italy.  Our Army unit hosted Guard and Reserve units at our makeshift base in a cornfield turned NATO base.  We shared the base with English, Greek, Turk and a host of other units from around the globe.  

For the life of me I can't remember the name of the town, but we were about 30 or so minutes from Venice.  We were set up in a old airfield with a giant concrete hanger bunker complex.

Golden Saber I (12th AF & Army III Corps, 1979 – 1988, Ground-oriented exercise, Ft. Hood, TX; Participants: GS I Exercise, 602d TAIRCW

I was part of III Corps out of Ft. Hood.

We flew a chartered jet from Ft. Hood, to Ft. Bragg, to Gander, Newfoundland over the Atlantic to Genoa Italy.  We stayed in Genoa for a few days then headed to Vicenza for a few days of briefings.  From there we headed to just outside of Venice where we set up a base station for Reserve and Guard units that rotated in all summer long.  Also at our base camp were units from various ally nations.  

Before we deployed home, myself and 4 or 5 other soldiers were tasked out to the port of Venice to oversee vehicles being loaded on ships headed back stateside.  We were housed at a small Italian Army base in Venice.  We were treated like royalty for a week.  The base commander had elaborate dinners for us every night.  It was great!
