I suffer from PTSD I got while serving in Iraq. I try to talk to others, and it helps, but nobody quite seems to understand. I talk to my VA Psychologist everyother week, and he suggest talking to other veterans with PTSD. Iwill talk with anyone that would like to talk, I also would would like to talk to some of you.

Go take a job in the timber/logging industry ...

Stuff like dodging chain saw blades will keep your mind occupied.

I'm not kidding - find something physical that needs getting done with a little get-up in your get-along.

I'm being serious, and you are talking stupid shit. Add to that you are an industry partner on this site. Are you serious about wanting to sell to vets if you wanna ran your mouth after one tries to help others out? Before now I was considering a few Larue products, but I am sure someone sells a similar product.

I was and am serious.

And good grief, if I had a dime for every time I was told someone was gonna buy somebody else's stuff over my advice, I'd be fishing at the confluece of the Kobuk and the Manulik right now, with fine wine and cheese nearby.

As I tell all, ignore my advice ... it's worth not a penny more than it cost.

No Sir, you are being rude. Also why are you in this thread as an industry partner and not as an indivual? I don't care how people won't buy your products, I know that I won't buy your products just because of what you posted. It was rude and insensitive, and out of place, I would appreciate it if you would stay out of my thread.

I agree with Mark on this one. I didn't spend any time overseas, but I worked a few years in a prison for the sheriff's office. I found myself paranoid all of the time, and didn't trust anybody. I stayed drunk, I pissed off people, I lost a lot of friends.

I took a job at CNC manufacturing plant. I work a lot of hours, at a very fast pace.

I cut back on drinking. I might have a few beers on the weekend, but nothing during the week, and no whiskey.

I stay busy on my days off. Doing stuff around the house that needs to be done, helping friends and my folks with their projects.

I still don't trust anybody, and I might still be a little paranoid, but I don't think about it near as much. I'd say that cutting back on alcohol may have done the most good, but I'm not sure.

I cut way back on my drinking the same plan you have, it helped to have a clear head for rational thoughts. Staying busy does help. If you don't mind what kind of problems did you have at the jail?

My wife says I have PTSD, but Im confident I don't, according to the criteria in DSM-IV-TR. I know some people who have had their lives ruined by PTSD, and I also know people who are defrauding the government and claiming they are combat casualties when the most adversity they ever faced was hearing the mortar sirens going off on their base. PTSD is a sore subject for me, so I will stop before I offend anyone.

Good luck on your group therapy. I have heard that it is the most effective treatment.

For me it is about controlling my thoughts. It is easy to sit and think negative thoughts and imagine negative scenarios. I have to realize I am doing that and actively replace negative thoughts with positive ones. It is a skill and like any skill you will likely suck at it at first but with practice you will get better. It takes the rational mind to speak louder than the emotional mind. Things have actually been pretty good for the past few months for me.

Any advice that someone may give at the expense of their time may be advice well heeded. No matter how superfluous it sounds it may help.

I saw enough shit that still causes me to have bad dreams and bad memories and I did whatever it took to not let it all get to me including keeping my mind and body busy. Talking about it can help. As more time goes by some of the memories have faded and others are just around the corner.

So Crazy Ray Ray, you can take whatever advice people give you how ever you want, but snapping the way you did isn't needed. I don't think Mr La Rue would have taken the time to post something to make light of your issues.

It's up to you to heal yourself and learn to deal with your issues, if not, you'll have a long road to tow.

If you're already hooked up with the VA, there should be support groups available. Locate one, heck locate three or four. Generally, you can meet folks whom you can give a call to during those dark times. Interestingly, the local VFW and American Legion in my area have support groups. As you have already figured out, just talking to someone who knows where you are coming from is a hugh help, often more help than you'd get from the shrink, unless the shrink has been there / done that themselves.

And, I'm very glad to see that you are looking for assistance. Way too many of us from my generation just tried to "John Wayne" it. That was a mistake. And don't limit yourself to guys of your age and war. Often times vets from WWII, Korea and Viet Nam have been dealing with this for long enough to have some pretty good insight. But the WWII and Korea vets are becoming scarce these days. I found that talking to vets from previous wars helped more than talking to other vets from south east asia. Maybe it's the sort of father/son dynamic.

Hang in there, it will get better.

This is something My Pschologist and I haven't spoke of. This is something I imagine could work, but did't really think of it, thanks for the tip.

Thanks, I didn't think the VFW or Legion would have that, I'll check in on this. It is a shame I can't get my Dad to talk, I know he has major issues from '67.

Hey Ray,

I'm in Indiana too. Sometimes the best thing for me is to just call up some of the guys that I served with. Just shooting the shit like usual helps sometimes. Doing something that takes my mind off things like tinkering around in the garage with stuff or going through my old things or doing craft stuff kind of lets some stress off too, either that or I just get pissed and anxious that I suck at crafts lol.

I tried talking to psychologist too while I was in, but she was a lunatic herself, and I accepted the fact that my advise would be better than hers.
RIP Mark Goyet. You were truly a great friend, and will be sorely missed. Semper Fi, brother.

Actually you're full of shit. You take LaRue's (I guess you don't know who he is or what he does) advice and discard it?

You might come find us in the military section of this forum. Submit your DD214 to the mods.

x3, I say you're full of shit as well. If you are who you say you are, you wouldn't be posting this shit all over the internet for God and Country to see!

There are plenty of folks to talk to about your troubles.
Everyone understands; how are you going to say no one understands? You're not the only sorry ass that went to a 3rd world country and carried a weapon!

I was overseas, saw some crap working in a Med unit. Call your friends you served with. They may be dealing with the same thoughts and emotions you are but think they are alone and might not seek help. be a leader for them to see. Keep busy!! I ran a half marathon about 2 years after coming home. the training and commitment was good for me, plus I got to watch fit women run Good luck, get through today.
