The second of two Rochester police officers shot late yesterday on Driving Park Avenue is undergoing surgery at Strong Memorial Hospital.



Rochester Police Officer LaRon Singletary said doctors operated on one officer overnight. They surgery for the second officer was underway late this morning and had been initially delayed due to swelling of the wound.



About 11:20 p.m., two officers were shot at an apartment building at 265 Driving Park Ave. The two male officers were responding to reports of a home invasion and were shot when they reached the third floor of the apartment building known as The Pierpont, Singletary said.



At the hospital early today, Rochester Police Chief David Moore said one officer, a three-year member of the department, was shot three times — in the hand, arm and chest. The bullet that struck the officer’s chest became lodged in the officer’s bulletproof vest.



The second officer, who has worked for the department for nine years, was shot once in the lower leg, he said.



Both officers are in stable condition with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Moore said.



The officers’ names were not released, pending notification of family members, Moore said.



Officers today are questioning several persons of interest at the Public Safety Building in connection with the shooting, Singletary said.



When officers arrived at Driving Park after the shooting late yesterday, “no one was there: The perpetrator had fled the scene,” Moore said.



The entire area around the shooting, several blocks in each direction from Driving Park and Pierpont Street, was secured for much of the night. During that time, officers from multiple area police departments searched door-to-door for suspects and witnesses, Moore said.



Lake Avenue reopened about 5:15 a.m.; Driving Park reopened about 6:50 a.m. Officers towed a sedan from Pierpont – located next to the apartment building – about 7:30 a.m.



Officers this morning searched yards on Selye Terrace and the area around the shooting. Officers were also investigating a broken third-floor window while on a fire escape at “The Pierpont” this morning. The fire escape remained secured this morning.



The area has a history of violence. Within a block on either side of the scene of the shooting, weathered white signs saying “Thou Shall Not Kill,” were at memorials for two different homicide victims.



Numerous police agencies were on scene overnight, including State Police, Monroe County deputies, and officers from Rochester, Greece and Webster. A State Police helicopter also circled over the scene.



A sign on the apartment building tells passersby that the “area is monitored by video surveillance.”



Rochester police plan to hold a news conference regarding the shooting later today.
