In about 1998, post Hollywood shootout, we got some money to spend at my hometown SO and went with 1187s (Ghost rings and speedfeeds).
We had to find one gun that everyone could shoot, semi-auto because our admin was a little scared of general issue of Mini14s or Ar15s. (This was really before anything but a CAR15 or A2).
I wanted Benellis also (M1S90), but the price point was crazy different. We bought 85 Remingtons and I had to keep them running. Here's what I remember in an nutshell. We shot about 100 rounds per officer per year and provided additional training ammo.
It hated air conditioning, and if it's not kept well lubed, it rusted quickly in the rack (true for most guns)
We had to do lots of training to convert folks and most folks didn't ever really "get" it.
We bought some 14" guns and they ran okay.
All that low recoil and cheap stuff did not work in it, but was great if you were running a malfunction course.
2 3/4 or 3" 00 Buck and Slugs are great in it, never really had malfunctions with contract ammo, regardless of manufacturer.
We did the replacement O ring every year during inspection, and I believe that we ended up getting replacements cheaper through maybe Grainger. For a dollar apiece, it was a cheap investment. We never did really have any problems with the trigger groups or parts breakage, and did authorize side saddles without having any problems with function.
Accuracy wise, it was pretty amazing with slugs. After the department went to mostly rifles, I ended up buying mine.
It's nice, but I'd probably fight for Benellis if I had to go in the wayback machine to do that project again.
If I had to do that project today, I would do Novas for pump and either an M2S90 or M4S90 for auto.
I have no idea how quality runs on Remington now, so your mileage will definitely vary.
