I applied for an officer position here in S. NV, but my resume is all 10+ years of IT.  Hoping that maybe I can slide in anyway but I can't imagine an LE recruiter looking at an IT background and being all "Yeah, that guy!"

I could do that and be pretty content I think. Interested in what pans out, if anything.

Some day I'd like to do the opposite.

They don't care too much what you did, they're looking for a reliable, stable work history, common sense, life experience and good people skills. You won't get stamped as "NERD DO NOT HIRE" anywhere except a really fucked up shitshow you don't want to work for anyway.

I know of a guy with a PHD in some crazy physics discipline who is a cop, several former tech industry people as well.

The only legitimate jobs I have seen actively hurt people in the applications field is a long time spent in low end security guard work. For some reason people think it is a stepping stone to LE work while in reality all it tells the hiring folks is that you are so obsessed with being a cop you will take minimum wage and shit hours in a do nothing job just to wear a uniform. I imagine things like strip club manager and porn fluffer would hurt too.

Like I tell recruits at the academy, job fairs etc. You can be a cop with ANY degree, but its hard to be anything other than a cop with just a CJ degree. I would say that IT would be desireable these days with all the Tech stuff we deal with.

I work with a guy who was IT for years. He is a solid officer and our go to tech guy. I think you'll find that your knowledge using computers will be applicable to law enforcement, I mean you do drive with a computer staring at you all shift. That and if you get on with a bigger department your niche knowledge will give you a huge leg up on cyber crime and may get you into a sweet gig.

Its possible and worth it if its what you want to do.

I worked for years with a guy that had a masters in paleontology.

What you need is good writing skills, good work ethic and communication ability.

The power to go without sleep also helps.

If you are under 37 years old, go to USA jobs.gov and look for IT work in the LE agencies.
You'll go to the Academy, you'll be LE, and you can lateral if you desire later .
Stay safe

I did.  I worked for many years in IT before moving into LE.  Pretty easy transition really:  People only tell you half of what they really did wrong to screw things up and put them into their current position and you have to fill in the blanks.

I thought about the cyber crimes route but I enjoy working the road too much to be cooped up in an office.  Maybe when the body tells me it's time to slow down.

OP...one thing that they will look at is the kind of money you make in IT and then accept the fact you want to work in LE.

I have a masters in CJ and I actively discourage people to get CJ degrees.  I'm going back to school next fall for something else.

12 years full time IT.  Took a leave of absence to put myself through the basic police academy.  Went back to work full time after the academy and on the side work part time for two different departments.  I would have gone full time, but my ex wanted a divorce right before I started the academy.  Divorce happened and the time with my now 5 year old is more important than a job.  Good luck!  It was all worth it to me!

I have a MIS degree and did 3 years as an Army CID Agent as a Digital Forensics Examiner (DFE) doing extractions from all sorts of digital devices, mostly laptops and phones though.  Now I'm with the Department of State.  There are a lot of 1811 DFE jobs out there that pay very well.  Just be aware that you will spend a lot of time sorting through child porn which absolutely sucks but needs to be done.

Most departments are starved for anyone with IT skills.  Everything from cracking passwords to getting the phones to actually ring.  Your background is not by any means a bad thing.

And since you've been in IT you already hate everyone and that means your are per-tenderized for what is to come.

Truth.

A lot of being a person with an I.T. background, involves being called to fix other officer's stuff in the field, so it doesn't have to be deadlined, and sent to city/county I.T.
MDT locked up? I get a phone call.
Desktop workstation crashes? I get a phone call.
Department smartphone stops receiving email? I get a phone call.
Sheriff breaks something on his computer? I get a phone call.

I've also become the default go-to person for graphic design, even though my skills are rudimentary, at best. I designed the current patches for the department, the ERT, and the warrant unit. I got pulled out of teaching a D.T. instructor school last week for about an hour, to make "emergency" changes to our department's Christmas card. Sometimes it gets old, but I can't really complain. Since I'm around the Undersheriff and Sheriff so much, it fast-tracked me and I made Sergeant in 3.5 years.

+1 to what everyone else has said, especially the parts about diverse backgrounds being an advantage instead of a hinderance.

The only thing I would add is don't get discouraged if this first app doesn't pan out, for varying reasons some apply several times (and many many more if you're thinking federal) before landing a job.

My FT job had a county IT person assigned to us full time a few years ago due to the on-going IT issues that a fleet and a lot of office desktops create
It kind of spoils you to be able to walk into the IT persons office and have a problem resolved.
Neither of the villages whose PT agencies I worked/ work for had an in-house IT person.
I just don't see how any level of government can function without a  dedicated IT person on the payroll.
Both PT places keep some guy on a  retainer for call in purposes, but every time they'd call the guy they'd rack up a repair bill of hundreds of dollars and then chirp that guys were surfing porn while working and getting virus' in the process.
Just doesn't make sense to not have someone on the payroll.
The old PT place after one particularly bad virus tried to dictate that no unofficial internet use could occur. Good luck with actually enforcing such an edict
They also had no anti-malware software at all. No Norton, no McAffees, etc. There was some minimally protective  program installed that I can't recall the name of that the county required for any computer hooked into their shared report-writing software, but that was it.

Well enough to pass. I did 20.5" on vertical jump, 53 sec on 300m sprint, 17.5 sec on agility test, 12:13 on 1.5mi run, and passed the situp/pushup portion easily.  I'm not a strong runner or particularly agile so I am happy with those numbers.

Did my oral interviews about two hours ago, and the captain who interviewed me pulled me aside and had some nice remarks, and suggested I push hard through the rest of the process.

So I've got drug test, background screening, polygraph, medical assessment, psych eval, and one more interview.   It'll really come down to the dineros as to whether or not I take it.

You should already have the money issue sorted.  They should have a published statement as to what the hourly wage is.  If it says from X to Y it'll be X unless you get some bonus for something like a second language but even that should be published.  You won't see Y until you get whatever number of years of longevity it takes to top out.  The department is putting time and money into running you through, but more importantly you could wind up taking a spot from somebody else who truly wants the job and is satisfied with the pay.

No. They have a range, but no negotiation was made at any point.

If that really ends up being the case -- and I'm holding a spot for someone who can take the wage -- I'll drop out of the process. Will get a hold of HR in the morning and find out.

I asked another applicant if she had heard if there was any mention of salary being established before we started trying out for the position, she said "no" also.  The range they have on the recruitment site is a $40,000 difference.  So either there's a footnote that us potential recruits didn't see, or it hasn't been breached yet.

As I mentioned, you'll be starting at the bottom.  There is no negotiation as you might associate with a salaried job. If you want to know exactly what the pay scales are, talk to the association (union) that represents the agency.  They'll be able to tell you what the longevity increases are as well as any additionals such as uniform allowance or foreign language as they are the ones that negotiated the wages and whatnot.  You might see a quick step up after completion of field training or after probation ends.  It all depends on how the labor contract is setup.  Talk to them and save yourself some time in the long run.

Look at the payscale and ask around. Everyone starts out the same, usually. And keep in mind that there is no social security taken out. So, you get more money there. Then there are pay steps and automatic raises, with a cost of living adjustment. All of them are in the contract. If you need to me to find it, send me a PM. A lot of police contracts are on the web.

And, don't forget the overtime. Overtime is around and can offset a shortfall. I took a 20k paycut to go in. I have that money back in a year and a half.

I'm bowing out of the process. I confirmed with the HR folks that the pay scale starts at $51k, and only up to ~$54k with other things (Veteran, POST completed already, bachelors).

Maybe at another point in life I can try again, but that nearly cuts my salary in half. Can't do it right now.
