Almost 20 years ago,  i survived a shooting.  Long story short,  i saved another officer,  was shot at 15 times at close range,  and survived.  The bad guy did not.

Now...20 years later,  I've had a great career.  I've been promoted a few times,  have a great family,  and am loving life.

My question:  I'd like to get a tattoo to commemorate the 20 year mark of surviving this encounter. Anyone have any ideas?  I'd rather have something small and cryptic.  Is there a standard "combat survivor" type tattoo?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!  Help me celebrate...

Beautiful work!

But not small and cryptic,  and I'm not retired.

(Actually,  the billyjoebob kids are young and terrible at sports,  so i probably won't retire for a while )

I'd just do the date, myself. It's enough. Get creative with the presentation if you like, but just the date. That's my suggestion. Good job, btw.

Get every entrance hole tattooed with a number from 1 to 15.

In order, if you can.

Shot AT not shot. I had to read it twice too lol. And OP, just know if you get the date people are going to constantly ask you what it is. I know I don't feel like talking about the time I got shot at to any dude at the pool who comes to ask me about my work. But then again people who are interested in tarts are gonna ask about them regardless. if that's not an issue then go for it and post pics! Congrats on surviving your brush with evil and welcome to the club

Second for the St. Michael with the date. That would be awesome. If I ever get hit - I'm going to get "better luck next time" tattooed around the scars.

Or if an officer gets shitcanned and has sour grapes against the agency and starts going to the media about "xxxx Police get a tattoo whenever they shoot someone BECAUSE THEY LOVE TO KILL MINORITIES" and it starts a big shitshow like a certain mid sized SoCal city is currently dealing with.

I am not an ink guy but if I was I would probably go this route but with an Old School Sailor Jerry type of style to it.

The St Michael idea is awesome!  I really like that.  Perfect way to quietly commemorate surviving.

I'll start working on an image,  and I'll post pix in December when it's done.

Thanks again.  You guys are great.

+1 for do something small with the date, but I'd avoid anything to id you as a police officer.  You never know when someone recognizes or targets you down the road simply because of it.

I have no problems letting people  know what I did for 25 years.
I don't get why you are ashamed of it.

Besides, I never said to put it on  the forehead.

Why is the OP not a "dirty inky"?

I'm a dirty inky.

Just the date.

Before I retired after 35 years, I got my Motor Unit call numbers done on my left upper arm in blue line numbers. Got my badge number just the same on the back of my arm. Just above them is the Una Stamus (we stand alone), along with the badge numbers of four friends lost in the line. At the shoulder is the callsign of a Brother killed in Khost in 2009. (The Zero Dark Thirty bombing)
Do the date in blue line numbers.

After reading an article about the retired NYPD guy, Ralph Friedman, I thought his "Justified" tattoo was pretty hardcore.
