I work Three days consecutively one week... on the next week, I work a fourth shift.

So essentially... on each paycheck, I will have these days paid for.

Week 1: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday

Week 2: Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday.

Work shifts are 12hrs. I work the same shift every week.

I know there are various specific names for all sorts of schedule plans... I was just wondering what you call this particular plan.

It allows me to have about 8 hours of overtime each paycheck... and also allows for a 4 day weekend every other week.

I call that my normal work schedule.  For those days, I have no life.

I wish we did 4 10s or maybe 5 8s instead.  I'm tired of 12 hours.

I used to do three 13hr shifts with 4 days off on third shift.
No rotation.

It was awesome but I slept the entire first day off.
Now I do 4 10hr nights with 3 off.  It's not as good as 3/12hr but better than 5/8hr nights.

Nightshift...The weak need not apply.

Used to work that, wasn't a fan.

Now it's a 5 and 2 with rotating weekends.

Mon - Tue on / Wed - Thur off / Fri - Sun on.

Opposing week is the opposite. 8hr day mixed in.

I run shifts like that for some of my people. Front end days and night work Sunday, Monday Tuesday, then Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Back end works WTFS then TFS. The all love it.

We worked this cycle fora few years before we went back to 4 x10's.  The last day of your four day work week was horrible.  Someone cold lob a severed head at you, and you would duck because you just didn't want to deal with it.
The 12's also sucked because you are either at work, or at home trying to sleep.  You had zero spare time if you needed to run errands before/after shift.

This .  Although not as bad as one schedule I worked...

Work 4, off 4, work 3 off 1 work 3, off 4, work 4, off 3 work 1 off 3.  12 hours shifts

Gotta love the good idea fairy

**Edit, after seeing Coles post, I'm glad it was a month of days then a month of nights and so on... Jesus... Sounds like someone in charge of schedule came from the Plants

The agency I just retired from after almost 32 years on the job works that schedule, 4 on, 4 off, 3 on, 3 off, 12 hrs shifts.
The three was not bad, but the 4 on was a pain in the ass.

We switched days to nights, every three months.
Every 4th week, the sergeants on the shift would switch weekdays to weekends.
That was 4 on, 4 off, 2 on, 2 off, 3 on, 3 off, then on with the rotation.

As a sergeant, you did not know what your schedule was, other than watching week to week, especially on nights.
Then toss in meetings, training, court, you never had any time off.
The officers have an extreme dislike for the 12 hour shifts, with the only caveat that they "like" the 4 days off. The only issue is that the way the shifts are set-up is that you move to your 4 days off after night shift, so in essence you only get 3 days off.
I do not like that schedule, and think that 12 hr shifts are a hazard.

The reason we had to go to that shift was a senior administration decision, which was based on the previous " city managers"decision to cut two patrol and two detective positions.
We went from a force of 14  sworn to 8 patrol, and one detective.
The reason for the cut was the former "city manager", at that time, was on a single 3 year contract, with no renewal, who had no previous public administration experience, and disliked law enforcement by his own admission in public, who was flexing his muscles based on comments from the bar owners and shitheads in town.

That was 4 years ago. The personnel cuts to this date have not been recovered.
I am glad I am out.

12 hour  and rotating shifts kill people.   Literally. 12 hrs on, an hour commute either side of that along with little things like, eating or picking up the kids,  barely give you enough time to get into bed.

At the end of four days they are all zombies  looking for a tree to run the car into. I've been to the funerals.

Austin PD is looking at messing with the schedule in order to cover for shortages. (there are 8 shifts working four 10's currently)  It's going to be a nightmare.

I can count on one hand all the departments I know that don't work 12s, at least here in MI.

Honestly, when I had jobs that had it, I preferred 8s.

On 12s, I feel like I'm always "catching up" on my days off from the work week.

I prefer the night shift, simply because I end up getting more sleep than when I'm on days.

I drive 40-45mins to and from work, and once I get everything that needs to be done at home, I usually only end up with 4-6 hours of sleep.
