I am currently in school for LE and have NEVER been a fan of Glock. However a buddy from work claims once I do get a job as a cop, I wont have a choice but to use Glock.
Is this most likely the case? Should I start learning to accept Glock? Thanks, Wissota4 |

All depends on the department. Around my a lot of places carry Sig's in either .357 sig or .40 but there are a few that run glocks.
|
|
Every dept is different and there and about a bazillion different options as to what some do/don't carry and what they will/won't allow you to carry. Yes. a large chunk of LE use Glocks (i'll stop just short of saying most), but don't waste time worrying about it until you are faced with the situation.
|
|
You should be way more concerned with what brand ink pen you're going to carry.
|
|
|
If that's what you are worried about with LE work, then you need to study harder and stop thinking about guns. Sure we all have things we prefer.....however, there is so much more to LE than what gun you carry.

Focus on your ability to write reports that don't make you look retarded.

Also remember that an agency might have glock today, and in 10 years its a Sig, and 10 years later is HK.
|
|
Yea I wouldn't buy a gun thinking that later down the line your going to use it as a duty gun.
I carry a Sig X-five tactical for duty use, if I was a town over it would be a Glock 21 or if it was another it would be an M&P40. |

When you don't know what a reset, it is easy to mock it as a staple gun trigger. |

its a functional handgun that is easy to address in a field situation, its lighter than some, decently accurate, and not the worst ergos or trigger

I would say 90% of agencies in my state use Glocks. All the state agencies do. Not a huge fan myself but I have no choice. I am wondering if the Sig P320 ends up putting a dent in Glock's reign.

I've never had to carry one at either sheriff's office I've worked at. Only Glocks are issued around here. I could live with it if I was required to carry one, but fortunately we are given some discretion. I carry a P226R 9mm (pre-2005, no-MIM) and a buddy of mine just got a VP9, which is also very nice.

I carried a SIG 229r in .357 SIG.
It was a sweet gun--much nicer imo than a glock. |

Ive lived with it for 33 years and find these odd balls amusing. They dont train, dont show up to training, never have much good to say about training "or much of anything". And they probably wont show up to the tough jobs or make the tough calls. You didnt ask about pens or report writing. Or studying, or anything else. You asked about guns. Now assuming this wasnt a cute poke at Glocks you can rest assured you'll get an adequate tool in function and a Glock is one of them. Im 58yo and I still shoot 3 or 4 times a month hand gun and rifle and dry fire practice every day and it never stopped me from writing an excellent report. If you want to move past the average zebra in the herd take advanced training with your firearms even if you have to pay for them yourself. You can always write them off on taxes. Heres a guy who did and it paid off for him. |

I've been LEO for only 3 years so I'm not supercop, but I patrol a hard neighborhood and see my fair share of crime.
With that said let me tell you what I have found to be important 1- Assuming your sharing a patrol car you need a good bag, one that fits all the things you'll need for duty. I have a 5.11 Patrolman's Mate 2- Clipboards, your going to want a good one for your activity sheet, another smaller one that holds everything you'll need on a traffic stop 3- Gloves, Get a good set for fighting/searching in and find a box of nitrile gloves that fit 4- Rain gear, ever had to direct traffic in the pouring rain without a coat because your reflective vest has to be your outer layer? Get a reflective coat 5- Head gear, You'll want a good hat for sun and a good beenie for cold make sure you get department approved ones 6- Spare cuff key and key fob for your patrol car, you will lock yourself out, you will look like a jackass 7- Get a good secure radio holder that wont come undone in a foot pursuit, it sucks and again you will look like a jackass 8- Find a pen you like buy a bunch and stock up on white out 9- Music for your car, get a lighter port powered FM transmitter or an aux cable if your patrol car takes one 10- GPS, try not to use it, learn your beat, but when you need it for an out of sector code 3 call you'll need it fast. Now that stuff will put you well ahead and save you lots of headaches, note that Glock vs 1911 wasn't in there. The academy will train you, you will be proficient, and if you feel you need more training seek it out. You'll find law enforcement friendly and discounted schools all over the place. Lastly pay attention to your FTO's, take the pieces of each one you like and figure out what part of the department you want to end up in. If you find a place you like seek out work that is similar on patrol and make a name for yourself there, be that traffic, DUI, Homicides, Drugs, Gangs...whatever. Good luck to you and stay safe. It is worth it! |

Fisher Space Pen
So cold you can't feel your hands, still writes. So hot out all the other pens bleed, not the Fisher. I've never owned a better pen. Buy a bunch of those Bic click top pens and a put them in something for everyone else to use when filling out statements etc. Keep one in your pocket for the "hey, can I borrow your pen" moments. Do not EVER hand over your pen, it will grow legs. |

Plus a handful of cheapies for everyone else. Mooch them from hotels and gas stations. |

Glocks are terrible. Just ask the Navy SEAL's. In all seriousness, don't be a duty gun snob. Train hard with it. Know your gun's strengths and weaknesses. I have been issued a Sig 229 for 16 years but prefer my personal Glocks. But when the department is willing to issue you a gun and ammo to shoot, just say " thank you, may I have another".
