I got the go ahead to look into changing my dept patrol rifle ammo. We currently are XM193 and variants. Right now the only requirements are that it is a reputable brand (Fed, Win, PMC) and we currently have some Independence too and that it be 5.56. The good thing about using XM193 is it is relatively cheap and guys can purchase there own if the want extra ammo in there cars and its usually always avalaible. But I know there are better rounds out there. Any suggestions? Currently we are issued RRA 16" Middys 1/7.

Didnt think RRA made a 1/7 barrel for their guns?

We have RRA Middy's as well with a 1/9 twist on the barrels.

Our duty load is currently Hornady TAP 55 gr.

Call your local FBI field office and ask for the PFI (primary firearms instructor).  They have an extensive CD on 5.56 ammo for LE that you can request on letterhead.

Their new duty ammo in 9 and 5.56 is about as good as it gets.

We're switching away from Federal handgun ammo to Hornady and changing brands across the board for long guns as well
Almost everyone in my area until this year or last was still issuing Hydrashok, but are finally transitioning away from it

If your department does not consider Hornady a "reputable" brand there is something wrong here

I don't understand agencies that don't issue something as basic as ammunition.

The potential liability alone makes it odd that they wouldn't at least state what ammo is allowed.

We used 55gn winchester ballistic silvertip with success, performs well just not super good through barriers.   It shatters in tissue very well.

We went to 64gm gold dot soft tip and have had great results also.  I really like that round.

I am a FF, but talk to the range master often, he buys 9mm, 40, 45, 556, 308. the cops get to shoot what ever and when ever they want, if they want to take a class at Thunder Ranch or any other gun school that has a decent reputation he will supply the ammo for the class.  Most any of the requests for classes are just rubber stamped approved.

Hm.If I go to a firearms school its almost always on my own dime on vacation time from the agency
The last few armorer classes have been on paid time on the agency dime

We run Hornady 223 Rem 55 gr TAP. It is good stuff but I wish I they would step to the 75gr TAP.

All of the dept issued rifles are 1/9 and my rifle (personally owned) is 1/7, it really likes the heavier pills.

We issue 55r Federal TRU.  No field use but shoots well.  Federal makes a ballistic equivalent for practice which is a nice bonus.

The Hornady 55 grain VMAX TAP and Winchester 5.56 55gr FMJ.  In downloaded 20 round mags, evidently they tested them with 20 and they weren't reliable .  I guess a handful of new Pmags would be asking to much.

Of course it is when you can save a buck or two per mag going with a slightly cheaper alternative

As do about 90% of Fed agencies.

Its a great round. Excellent accuracy (as long as you're not using old surplus rifles with a really slow twist) and excellent performance in gel tests.

GoldDot 55.

Only stay with 55 as we have some old DRMO 1:12 M16s in service.

Gold Dot 64g

Until recently it was Win Ranger 55g SP (or Rem UMC 55g FMJ/XM193/Win Q3131 if you got the RO who didn't know the difference). None of those are good choices. You also got a 30rd GI mag of varying quality/condition with 21rds (I have no idea why they picked that number). I was fortunate to get a friendly RO who gave me a case so I could have extra mags loaded.

We recently switched from Federal 62gr Tactical Bonded to Armscor 62gr Bonded Soft Point.  The Armscor is new production ammo with new brass and uses the Fusion bullet.  Armscor won't advertise that for contract reasons but a sales rep friend told me that and I then pulled bullets and checked it myself.  The Armscor ammo is also extremely consistent with very little deviation across the chronograph.  Its hot too, averaging 140FPS faster than the Federal.  Accuracy was better than the Federal as well.

Best part, we are buying it for half the cost.

55grn FMJ somethings. I carry a 20" A1 barrel and forearm and am getting over 3150 fps so I expect it will perform.
