Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - Anyone ever repaint their leather?

Anyone ever refinish their leather helmet?  Unfortunately my helmet may be changing colors come January 1, and am going to repaint it yellow, but I want to do it correctly. It's a second hand Cairns, and it has a few different colors underneath. Am not opposed to just painting over the black, but want to try and do it the right way.

I sand blasted mine at the lowest psi to just take the paint off. It looked great bare leather but had to be black at the time so some high temp primer then gloss black still looks good.

Someday Ill buy a cairns helmet. Its just low on the priority list right now...

How old is the leather helmet? And are you required to go by the 10 year rule? Both my career and volunteer departments require new helmets every 10 years due to the NFPA guidlines.
