That poster of inmates working out is enough for me. I'm on my phone now, will find it when I get to a 'puter.

The one of the inmate In a BOP shirt working out that states, "Everyday you don't workout someone else does"?

I'm a probation/parole officer, when I pick up parole cases I usually ask how many push-ups they are up to.  Most are saying 700 to 1000 over the course of a day.

This is the first year of our mandatory PT program which includes a year test. Best thing we have done in a long time to promote fitness.

We're trying to implement one as well, which I support.

Being physically fit is a huge factor in a foot pursuit, fight, gunfight, etc. Hell one can argue even driving fast or doing anything that elevates your heart-rate...  And this isn't even bringing longevity into play. Most LE eat a crappy diet and have huge periods of inactivity at work.

We are baby stepping this because we are only the third agency to my knowledge in our area of the state that have a mandatory program. Right now we have a yearly obstacle course type test each September. Then we have monthly PT trainings. At this point the officers are not comped time to work out other than the monthly training we do and the yearly exam. We are however working towards a comp time incentive for working out on your own time, but that part of it is still in the works.

Good grief.  They want to be COMP'D time for working out!?  That's just a disgrace man.  Guys need to get off their fat butts and get in shape if they are out of shape.  Sometimes I feel like the only guy with self motivation

We pull 12 hr shifts.  Guys are provided one 45 minute break and one 30 minute break; the 45 to be designated as work out time (on duty).  You can combine the two if work load allows.  We have our own officer weight room in our basement with commercial quality stuff, plus all of the guys are allowed to work out on duty  at our rec center which is a commercial gym.  Getting ready to begin mandatory fitness tests within the next year.

It's a huge bone of contention over here, especially for specialist roles like firearms. The levels of fitness required are quite high, but you are expected to train for them at your own time and expense. The basic fitness level required for everyone is a joke, and not rigidly enforced. However if you are an AFO and don't reach the level required for your particular role, you lose your post.

I have no problem with being required to be at a higher level as a specialist, but it should be done in duty time, as it is a requirement of the role. We aren't expected to practice weapon handling and marksmanship in duty time.

I have used the organisation's stance which is obviously to save time and money) against them. Two of my team failed their periodic fitness tests. I suggested that it is an organisational responsibility to enable them to reach the required levels, so as their supervisor I would make an action plan. liaise with occupational health etc, to let them train in duty time 3 times a week to get their fitness up. My bosses said no, it's their personal responsibility. Ok says I. A couple of months later, said bosses enquire of me how their fitness is coming along as their inability to carry a firearm is costing the department money. My response,' How should I know, you decided it is their personal responsibility?'
