THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
The only jist I got was that it's similar to para-military training... that's easy to relate, although I am slightly out of shape... run time could be better.

Is there anything I should be prepared for or that I should expect?

I won't be certified until I get picked up by an agency. First academy, then state exam

Where are you going?

I went to an academy in Central FL and it was very much like you describe. Understand that the PT will test your body and push you to your physical limits, but your head can get you through anything. The guys who didn't make it through my academy failed because they weren't mentally tough enough.

I If you are a leader, be one at the academy. Everyone told me to just go in and keep my head down but I requested a leadership role and got it. It is more work and it won't do you any good when you're getting hired, but a class with a proper class president and good, solid squad leaders makes a huge difference in every aspect of the academy.

The academy is the most fun you'll ever have that you never want to do again.

Good advice on leadership. Don;t shy away from being a leader if that's you. The cadre will understand that leadership is not easy.

Don't understand what you are saying.
The title says you got accepted to the FL LEO academy.
That makes me think state officer.

But then you say unil I get picked up by an agency.

Is it the academy in your area?
Or are you going to be a state officer?
I'm not trying to call you out, but its two different things.

There are very few agencies left in FL that will sponsor you through an academy. You self-sponsor yourself and if you pass the state exam after you are then certifiable. Once you're hired by an agency, you become certified. It's weird, and a pain in the ass but it was an experience. I have the student loan to prove it.

You don't have to be hired by an agency to attend the academy. "The Academy" is misleading in itself, as there are several academies run by colleges throughout the state. FHP and GFC/FWC (or whatever they are called this month) have their own Academies in Tallahassee, I believe.

When you complete a local academy, you then have to pass the State evaluation exam to be certified, but your cert is not active until picked up by an agency, county, municipal, or state.

In short, he is correct. He is attending the LEO academy, but he is not going to be a State officer.

All LEOs in FL have the same certification. State officers (FHP, GFC/FWC, FDLE, Dept of Ag, etc), Deputy Sheriff's, or municipal police all have the same standards of training.

Some local agencies will hire someone who is not certified and then send them to an academy, but this is increasingly rare as there are certified officers available and it is not cost effective if they wash out.

Forgot to add, if you're OCD like myself some of the test questions will piss you off. I have a photographic memory, and I could picture where on the page the paragraph referred to by the test question was located. I remembered the exact wording of definitions. I was pissed more than once when the test question took EXACT words from more than one definition, blended them together and I picked the wrong answer as a result.

Some of the test questions are bullshit, and the tests are easy. If you can sign your name you can pass.

FWC closed their academy in Havana; last I knew if you were hired they sponsered you in a regular academy then they just gave you an extra however weeks of specialised holdover training.

I understand how it works, and part or your responses are right, and some parts are incorrect.
Saying you are going to the FL LEO academy has an undertone of being a state officer.
No one calls it "the FL LEO academy."
You are just going to "the academy."

I am a active FL LEO.
Have been for 12 years.
Maybe I just read to much into it.

More and more states/areas are starting to do this. Here in our area of NY we call the "Pre-emploment". They go through the academy "unsponsored" at the same time as rookies that are attending the academy as sworn LEOs. I give them a lot of credit.

Friend of mine did it perhaps 7 years ago while he was perhaps 43 y.o. The physical part was ok for him though he did prepare for it. He related that the hand to hand training was a joke, the instructor was specific that the students should never attempt it in real life or it will get them killed but it's in the official program to be taught. Also that the certification written test had nothing to do with what was taught and seemed to make no sense. At least the instructors warned them about it.

Yeah, pretty much all of that.

I didn't get to know ANYBODY in my academy until after I graduated. The younger kids did all the getting together on the weekend and socializing. Going through at 30 years old I just sat back and tried to survive. I could have been better at the physical fitness stuff but I was fine with getting my ass kicked by guys 10 years younger than me. I was ranked second academically and second when it came to shooting. We had a shoot off between me and next best guy, he took it fair and square but I'd like to think it had something to do with us crawling through powdered CS/CN during part of the shoot scenario. I wound up dropping a full mag trying to connect with a shot at 50 yards, with my glock 22, and just sucked. The other guy got lucky and hit it on his second try leaving him a full mag to complete the course.

*All florida academies are NOT created equal

*If your lucky enough to go through a tough academy with added courses....take it all in

*if your lucky enough to have a sheriffs office sponsored academy, with veteran officers / swat officers training you....take it all in, and put out more than the next guy

*if your academy doesn't do redman.....

*a good academy will let you win as a team and fail as a team....dont let anyone fall asleep during constitutional law in the first few weeks

*don't be a kiss ass, just be a hard worker....getting a recommendation from an instructor toward your future job goes a long way

spent 11 months of my life in a sheriffs sponsored academy in florida, graduated 2005

if states were smart they would do this.....if a individual is dedicated enough to drop 4000 dollars....in my case....of his own money and put up with 6-11 months of having their ass handed to them, they would be slightly more dedicated than someone coming off the street and getting hired and pushed through the academy...

it would also save alot of money for the department doing this and would give departments a pool of certified people
