THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
hello all, i'm starting EMT-B classes to eventually get my Paramedic cert (and hopefully then land a fire/ems job). Curious if there are common websites yall use for things like pen lights, exam gloves, masks, stethoscope, alcohol wipes, etc etc.

I know i can piece all this out at places like Walgreens, and amazon, but i wanna make sure i'm buying decent quality equipment that's meant to be in used and abused in the field.

Once you finish school and land a job, your employer should be furnishing you most of the stuff that you're talking about (i.e. gloves, alcohol wipes, etc). Don't be in too much rush right off the bat to go out and buy yourself the latest and greatest trauma kit with all kinds of stuff that you'll find you really don't need.

Having said that, Moore Medical is a pretty good source for all sorts of medical supplies. Galls also carries some medical stuff, along with LE and fire, but I find that they're often overpriced, and their kits include unneccessary extras.

One other note - I may be committing heresy to some people, but before you go out and drop $200 on a Littman Cardiology stethoscope, in my experience I can hear just as well or better with a cheap $15 Sprague-Rappaport style.

Galls was recommended among a few others by the professor, and he said the same thing about "a $20 set will do everything you need."

I just don't want to buy an underpowered penlight that's gonna crap out or have bad leads, or a stethoscope that has loose fittings and come apart in the middle of training.

IDK about that. we have some of the cheap SC for day to day stuff and while they are ok for taking BP's, i swear i can hear a flea fart from across the room with the Littman we have stashed away for cardiac sounds. i wouldnt buy one myself but they are nice to have on the bus.

as for equipment, anymore i dont carry anything personally other than a couple of pairs of gloves in the truck. i have more in my home FAK then in my truck.

The shape of the cone makes a difference on what you hear. El-cheapos, Spague-Rappaport are for blood pressures, you can get some decent lung sounds at times but size and density (girth and fatness) can come into play. Those fancy Littman cardiology ones that are $200 and up are for lung sounds or heart tones. Not the obvious wheeze or rales but which one of the two is it? And the pulmonologist will tell you this part is a rales and that part is a wheeze. hearst murmers? That is what you buy those exspensive ones for. You can get a B/P in a nice quiet house. Near a fairly busy road, I won't hear shit for a B/P.

For EMT class keep the stethoscope price down under $50 for certain. You get more involved and go on to be a paramedic and you need to hear the lung sounds and heart tones, buy a good one then.

Buy one of the Energizer penlights(available at most places that flashlights are sold). The rest of the stuff listed in your OP should be provided by your employer. 3 or 4 sets of cheap shears should last you a while if you like to have your own or the school requires them. If you feel like you just have to have a higher end stethoscope, get a Littman Lightweight or Classic.

Streamlight makes a penlight that a few of my medics use.

Littman stethescopes make a great gifts (birthday, xmas, graduation, happy no VD Dr's note, first born puppy,..). I love my master classic 2 SE, but I also didn't pay for it.

After 15 years the only thing I carry in my pockets is an N95 mask and my stethascope (and yes, it's a littman). Anything else I need is in my kits. I put the mask on when I'm intubating and don't ever want to get caught without it.

Yeah, I have a hard time remembering to bring a pen to work with me. i just stash one in the rig.

Get a personal stethoscope, the 15 dollar sprague will do the job just fine.

Get a set of shears or 2.

A penlight is needed, I use a fenix. Forgot that at home today, gonna have to use my surefire

Get a nice flashlight for general use. Dark alleyways, and when you drop something at night. I use a E1E executive elite.

Get a bag for work stuff ( I use a LAPG bail out bag)

Don't get a rescue randy bag, you barely have a clue at what you are doing, you shouldn't be stopping at MVAs and helping anybody yet. When you get a job your work will supply everything needed for the rig. You supply everything you want for your personal use, don't go overboard with the batbelt.

Start with a basic steth and BP cuff and go from there. You can spend a lot on a steth but start small. I've got a Littman Classic II I've had for 15 years. It's been through a lot but the tubing is starting to get stiff. I'll be picking up a Littman Cardiology this year.

I buy a lot of supplies for my personal kits from Chinook Medical.

Keep in mind that your going to get blood, puke, piss and shit on all of this stuff at some point. Yes it can be cleaned but sometimes when you're having a long day it's more satisfying to throw it away and start over..................

In other words don't go over board on buying a bunch of expensive stuff. As others mentioned your employer will provide most or all of it.

Don't need ANY of this stuff? If he is working on a unit no, but for a personal kit, not sure what you consider a need, but the stuff I highlighted in red alone seems like things you are going to want to have on hand.

Not trying to be a dick or start a pissing match, but the guy asked a question where to get gear. Rather than telling him he doesn't need stuff, I gave him an option that would give him the basics plus all the do dads that new guys like to have. I know it has been a long freaking time since I used a lot of that shit, but work with guys every week that use some of it all the time. Personal preferences.

He isn't even a licensed EMT yet.

He never mentioned using it as a personal kit, he wants something to "use and abuse" in the field.

He needs to get experience after he passes his EMT class before he starts worrying about going all rescue randy at an MVA or something.

Great advice here. I have been an EMT with my department for 5 years and just got my Paramedic in March. I bought a $20 steth when I was in EMT school and used it on my clinicals. It has been sitting in my closet since I got out of class. Any service you work for is going to have all the equipment you will need. Most schools will want you to purchase a steth for class and clinicals. A Sprague will be fine. I have to admit that I did purchase a $200 Litmann while I was in medic school and it does make a world of difference on lung sounds and heart tones. But, you won't need it as an EMT. A cheap trauma kit wouldn't be a bad idea as others have said. It will have your shears and pen light. Good luck with class and have fun with it.

I need to add...in your first post you made it seem like you wanted to get your medic before landing an EMS job. Get your EMT and start practicing in the field. Nothing will prepare you for being a Paramedic more than field experience. Hopefully I didn't misunderstand you.

You can also buy 3 or 4 of the "disposable" / isolation stethoscopes for the price of one equally shitty bookstore stethoscope. The ones we have in our hospital work pretty well for gross assessment like basic breath sounds and blood pressures.

You can lose them, throw them away, give them away, whatever. No one will ever steal it because it looks like cheap crap (which it is), but if they do, you have back-ups. Or you pilfer a replacement from an iso cart at one of the hospitals you train at.

The goals are as follows
While working on EMT: Apply at every department that doesn't require any pre-certs while working on EMT.
After EMT: apply at all departments that will hire just an EMT, apply to basic firefighter class if EMT alone can't land job

I would get your medic before the fire academy.
