I do since I have an SUV and there is no way to store
the weapon outside of the passenger compartment.

Unloaded and locked in a separate container (lock box) if you have no trunk.
When I used to travel through different states I would always send an email to the Attorney General or other in that type of position and tell them I planned on traveling through the state with a handgun and would 926A be the way to do it. They would reply and I would print it out and save them in a envelope...A little piece of mind if stopped by someone who wasn't familiar with the law. |

IL HTF would be a better place to get IL specific info.
The question gets asked repeatedly with tons of misinformation, so here you go: http://www.ar15.com/content/page.html?id=519 http://www.isp.state.il.us/docs/1-154.pdf Firearms need to be unloaded (chamber empty and any mags with ammo out of the firearm) and enclosed in some kind of case, cardboard box, gun rug, or other kind of container that completely encloses the firearm. If so enclosed it does not need to be in a separate compartment of the vehicle. FOID is only for IL residents, non residents are exempted. Illinois' state transportation requirements are less stringent than FOPA. As long as you avoid the handgun/AW ban cities in the Chicago area there should be no problem. |

Abide by FOPA is the right answer. Ammo in a separate container (recommend locked but not required per FOPA) and gun in a locked container, out of sight (no visible signs of guns leads to fewer questions if stopped).
