I am taking a trip to Maine next month and may possibly be on the campus once or twice. My hazy recollection is that HR 218 usually applies to state campuses, but not to private university. And if prohibited the crime would be trespassing, not a firearms violation correct? Meaning disarm or leave upon the request of the campus officials?

a city officer in my county got hassled at a nearby university by campus PD for being armed while in uniform to drop something off on his why to work. I have carried on that campus as well as others and I just don't advertise the fact I am armed so I have never had an issue. Right or wrong I carry. I am probably in the wrong but I will fight that fight if it ever arrises.

Well I found the question somewhat addressed at this link. Maine Campus PD It is a little unclear whether it is saying all sworn law enforcement are exempt from the Ccw prohibition or if they are required to leave it at UMPD. In any event, it states:

Any employee, faculty, student, or other representative of the University of Maine who violates this policy shall be notified of the violation and subject to disciplinary sanctions under the applicable discipline process.

Any member of the public who violates this policy shall be notified of the violation and asked to comply. If the public member will not comply, the individual shall be removed from campus and subject to all legal penalties, including the criminal trespass provision under Maine Law.

So basically if you are caught they will ask you to disarm, and if you refuse they ask you to leave.
