Shotgun or Carbine. She's about 5'5" and 63 years old. I want her to have access to a weapon and am wondering if I should build her a light weight mid length or get her a youth model 870. she likes guns but hasn't shot one in decades. what say the ladies?

I'm not a lady, but I would get her an old double and cut the barrels down to 18.5" and give her those little short Mexican (Aguila?) buckshot shells.

The guy who gets hit with one won't care that it was a short, and a 63 year-old lady with a shotgun will most likely scare off just about any threat.

Take her to the range and let her shoot a variety, long guns and handguns. Whichever she feels most comfortable with is the winner. I've seen people who have shot guns in the past and were convinced they could easily do so now only to find they are scared to death of the guns recoil, muzzle blast etc.

And buy her a class for Mother's Day. She may know how to shoot; but can she shoot under stress?
