W.H.B. Smith’s “Book of Rifles" and “Small Arms of the World” are classics.   Don’t know if they’re still in print.

Ordnance Went up Front, (?).  Very Good overveiw of WW2 and previous small arms from a user's veiwpoint.  This is an excellent starting point.

Anything by Brophy.  Limited to US small arms (Springfield, Krag, Marlin)

Anything by Collector Grade Publications for what ever turns you on.

The parts catalogs put out by Numrich Arms, Gun Parts, and that huge 2 volume set put out by ?.

Cruise the Used book stores on the net as well - I use Abebooks.com, and often find good books cheap.

Depending on how deep you wish to delve into minutiae, I would recommend:

The complete guide to the M1 Garand & M1 Carbine----- Bruce N. Canfield

The complete guide to the M-14 rifle-----
 again by Canfield

Really interesting stuff about the developement of the sniping program in SE Asia, and some col M-14 info bits:

The long range war, sniping in Viet Nam-----
 Peter R. Senich

For some cool info about what happened to all of those Garands:

 The M1 Garand-Post WW2--- Scott A. Duff

Everything that you ever wanted to know about maintaining, repairing, or modifying a Garand or 14:

The US .30 caliber gas operated service rifles
 By Jerry Kuhnhausen

If you could find it - and afford it - Sharpe's
"The Rifle in America," would top my list. Long
out of print, I used to have it, and I wish I
still did.  John
