Motorcycles?
Since 1986 the Marines used Kawasaki KLR 250's until this year.
They have now switched to Kawasaki KLR 650's.

The USAF Security Squadrons use 500cc one cylinder Harley Davidson dirt bikes.  I dont know if they even sell them on the street.  They are a up engined version of the bikes they built for the British Army which were 375cc.

It sounds like they have both the KLR650 and the Harley 500cc.  I saw one of the Harley's fully decked out like the military.  The dealer wanted $8,900!!!!!

I would like to know what the differences are between the military KLR650 and the civilian model.

TIA!  DaMan

I work with a guy that has one of those Harley's. It was part of an over production of the Govt. contract and Harley Davidson released them to the public. Last I talked to him it was for sale. Anyone interested e-mail me and I'll hook you up. He said something in the $9,000.00 range if I remember correctly.

ClearFire, thanks for that excellent site!

Uncle Buck, your friend's Harley is plenty cool.  But at 9K????

The Harley I saw was equipped with everything.... scabbard, GPS, binocular case...COOL!  But, I think the Kawaski KLR650, used by the Army and the Jar.... (oh 'scuse me!).... Marines, is a better bike.  Better performance at lower cost.

Is there a site with the Harley specs?  I can only find their road bikes on the Harley site.

The Harley that you are talking about, it's either a 350 or a 360, not a 375.
They were originaly produced by SWM of Italy, they were bought out by Armstrong of England.
Armstrong was bought by Harley in 1986.
They were/are used by the Brits and the Canadians.
The current Armstrong motorcycle web site:

Harley does not "make" a complete 500 CC motorcycle (just like they never "made" any of the two strokes back in the 60's/70's, those were made by Arrmachie . The engine they use is a Rotax 500 CC engine. This same engine is used it the Harley 500cc flat track bikes. Ron Woods uses the same engine in his 500cc flat track bikes, BMW uses an updated Rotax engine that is a 650 in their 650 enduro bike, it has been used in the ATK and the American Dirt Bike motorcycles too.
The Rotax single cylinder family (350, 500, 600, 650) is one of the strongest and longest lasting single cylinder engines today.

Armstrong Military Motorcycles:

Buell Motorcycles (of which Harley is a 51% owner) makes a single cylinder 500cc motorcycle. It is basicly a sportster engine with the forward cylinder removed and a counter balancer in place of that respective connecting rod.
There is no way that the Buell Blast could be mistaken for a military dual purpose motorcycle.

Here is a for sale ad for an Armstrong-Harley:
$7999.99
