Never got to knew the man as he died when my father was a child.  I thought I was given a box of my great grandfathers World War 2 stuff but It was a collection of buttons and a lone medal.  Can anybody help tell me about them?

Awesome find.

I'd cherish that.

No idea with the medal, but the cannons indicate field artillery.  Poor guy; in WWI especially those guns were going nonstop and they weren't doing much for hearing protection.  A bit safer than the line infantry, but I imagine he got pretty fried from the job.

ETA: sorry, I can't read.  Thought you said WWI not WII .  Still, FA is pretty demanding on the body and ears.

That's the WWI Victory Medal. http://www.medalsofamerica.com/Item--i-F045_Full_Size_List

It looks like the clasps indicate the battles in which he participated. I did a quick google search on a couple of them, and there is plenty of reading about the battles.

The button is for Field Artillery as the poster above me stated.

ETA: The "button" appears to be an enlisted collar device for Field Artillery. http://www.emersoninsignia.net/files/Download/7ArtilleryPost1895.pdf

Looks like the WW1 Victory Medal, and it has the campaigns streamers (i think that what is called) attached to them.

Looks like you have this one:  "28th “Keystone” Division, Pennsylvania National Guard. (Champagne-Marne, Aise-Marne, Oise-Aisne, Meuse-Argone and Defensive Sector)"  Since it has 5 bars.

If he was from Maine, could they have used him or his unit to round out a unit going overseas?
