Neat bit of history- thanks for posting it.

I am surprised that the property is still as it was, considering its location in one of the most expensive real estate areas on earth.

The idea behind a circular fort is the theory that cannon balls would glance off the walls or embed itself harmlessly into the brick.  Another such fort (Castle Williams?) was built on nearby Govenors Island and Castle Pickney in Charleston Bay.
