Reading a book about Ellis Island and nearby Castle Garden (originally called West Battery and now Castle Clinton) was mentioned several times. I don't recall this ever coming up in any of my US history courses.
http://www.nps.gov/cacl/index.htm Originally a military installation built for the War of 1812, it functioned as the main immigration center for the US from 1855 to 1890. Between 8-12 million immigrants were processed through Castle Garden. Well into Ellis Island times many immigrants were still convinced they came through Castle Garden instead of Ellis Island.

Neat bit of history- thanks for posting it.
I am surprised that the property is still as it was, considering its location in one of the most expensive real estate areas on earth. A better view of it and the modern day city:

The idea behind a circular fort is the theory that cannon balls would glance off the walls or embed itself harmlessly into the brick. Another such fort (Castle Williams?) was built on nearby Govenors Island and Castle Pickney in Charleston Bay.
