Hey guys/gals - I've never done a private sale and had some general questions...

I am in Ohio and believe private sales are legal.  I don't know how comfortable I am with private sales.  As the seller, what do you ask the buyer to provide, if anything?  Do sellers just want to see a driver's license?  Do sellers normally write down some basic buyer information?

One scenario I am not comfortable with is if I sell to a seemingly nice person but they turn out to have a felony wrap sheet - then some liability falling on me somehow if the buyer misuses it.

I know that if I am not comfortable, I can always just go through an FFL.  I am merely asking for your opinions on private sales, and how you would feel about doing them.

Thanks...

to cover your butt, make out a Bill of Sale, It's your reputation on the line, so get a DL and print out the name and address on the bill of Sale. Show your DL and show you copied it exactly as printed exactly as it is on your DL.  The both of you should sign both copies, one for you, one for the buyer.

Don't feel uncomfortable about this.  It's your life on the line. If something does happen the gun can and will be traced back to you.  If the buy feels uncomfortable/uncompliant then don't sell it to him/her.
