CD Micheals of CRPA wrote this about the CA assault weapons ban (SB23) in the September newsletter to members:
Originally, the 1999 law turned Olympic target pistols into "assault weapons," and Junior Olympic shooters into felons. Red-faced legislators fixed that in 2001 (tellingly, over the objections of the original bill's author, Senator Perata, who suggested that the affected Olympic shooters move to Texas).

What 2001 legislation is he referring to?

It was an ammendment to SB23 that added section 12276.1(b) to the law exempting 18 named target pistols from the law. These are pistols sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee for Olympic competition,

Here's the official site for California law and bills and such: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/ Most of the data is dynamic, so you have to enter your own search criteria each time you use it. The bill was AB 2351 from the 1999 - 2000 legislative season. Here's the list of handguns that were outlawed by SB 23 then un-outlawed by AB 2351: MANUFACTURER MODEL CALIBER ANSCHUTZ FP .22LR BENELLI MP90 .22LR BENELLI MP90 .32 S&W LONG BENELLI MP95 .22LR BENELLI MP95 .32 S&W LONG DRULOV FP .22LR GREEN ELECTROARM .22LR HAMMERLI 100 .22LR HAMMERLI 101 .22LR HAMMERLI 102 .22LR HAMMERLI 162 .22LR HAMMERLI 280 .22LR HAMMERLI 280 .32 S&W LONG HAMMERLI FP10 .22LR HAMMERLI MP33 .22LR HAMMERLI SP20 .22LR HAMMERLI SP20 .32 S&W LONG MORINI CM102E .22LR MORINI 22M .22LR MORINI 32M .32 S&W LONG MORINI CM80 .22LR PARDINI GP .22 SHORT PARDINI GPO .22 SHORT PARDINI GP-SCHUMANN .22 SHORT PARDINI HP .32 S&W LONG PARDINI K22 .22LR PARDINI MP .32 S&W LONG PARDINI PGP75 .22LR PARDINI SP .22LR PARDINI SPE .22LR SAKO FINMASTER .22LR STEYR FP .22LR VOSTOK IZH NO. 1 .22LR VOSTOK MU55 .22LR VOSTOK TOZ35 .22LR WALTHER FP .22LR WALTHER GSP .22LR WALTHER GSP .32 S&W LONG WALTHER OSP .22 SHORT WALTHER OSP-2000 .22 SHORT

Thanks guys... I could find that info on Lockscum's DOJ website. Now how about the DCM competitors like myself? Is it legal to grant exemption to one class of competitive shooters?

I feel your pain, stator, but the exemption for the Hammerli, etc. pistols was done in response to emotional appeals from young shooters who have Olympic aspirations. In other words, it was done For The Children. [50]
