Just curious, could you make an AR rifle into a pistol legally? I have seen kits to make pistols into rifles, but does it work the other way?

Thanks,
ARben

In New York, it's definitely a no no.  I'm not sure of other states.

Is it a short barreled rifle even if it doesn't have a stock?

Legally?
No.

The law is very straight forward.

A pistol is a pistol.
A rifle is a rifle.

If you configure an AR15 rifle in a pistol configuration you have made a short barreled rifle.
There are tax, ATF, and CLEO considerations.

If you have a legal preban AR15 pistol you can put a stock and a 16 inch barrel on it (must be 26" overall) and have an AR15 rifle.
This is legal, no paperwork involved.
