As a military member I've had to live here on and off for 20 years and I learned that many things I've done here are illegal. I owned a de-milled hand grenade, shot an air pistol in my San Diego garage, bought a night vision rifle scope with and IR illuminator, and have owned a radar detector of some sort for 20 years.

Are radar detectors now illegal in California?

I knew about the obstruction of vision - how a student parking pass is illegal but a handicapped parking permit isn't - even if the student pass is smaller than the handicapped permit.

I will say this: ANY evidence of a radar detector will guarentee you a ticket if you're stopped for speeding.  Including those little circles the suction cups leave on the window.  And those lights are visible from behind, even through window tint.

Just food for thought.  I speed everywhere (80-85 MPH), have no detector (though I know where a few speed traps are), and haven't received a ticket since 1988.  Even the best detectors give tons of false-positives in the Bay Area, and the cops use mostly "instant-on" anyway.

I've got a Valentine One which is a really super detector and has saved my behind more than once in the last three months. Living in Riverside county I've learned the back roads where the limit is 50 mph but traffic does 60-70 mph. The police out here just leave their units on as I pick up their Ka radar at great distances.
