The BATF website states "When there is a change in the configuration of or a modification to a registered firearm, the registrant should notify the NFA Branch in writing so that the NFRTR can reflect the accurate description of the firearm."

Q- is this an actual requirement or is this a nice to do?  e.g., you remove the 20 inch upper on the registered M-16 (Form 4 stated 20 inch M16 rifle)and replace with an 11.5 inch upper and collapsable stock.
