Minimum barrel length for a non-NFA rifle is 16". So YES you will need to have the flash surpressor permanently attached of you use a 14.5" barrel (Bushmaster does this). Or you can just get a 16" M4 type barrel (and not be able to properly use a bayonet) both Colt & Bushmaster have these.
If you are willing to pay the $200 tax and go throught a BATF anal exam you can make it a legal Short Barrel Rifle, just like the military ones. |

16" minimum bbl. length. If the flash suppressor/muzzle break is counted as "barrel" it needs to be "spot welded in four equadistant places on the barrel" or "silver soldered at least one/half the perimeter of the barrel."
16" is measured from the end of the breech. Locking lugs for the bolt don't count. Helps to give it an extra 0.5" just so's when you're shooting in sub-Arctic conditions the bbl. doesn't contract from the cold and become unlawful. |
