...About thirty minutes ago.

Called the police, they got both sides of the story, and said it was a dead-end. "He said, she said".

The ex has a diverse record, has threatened people with firearms, and is currently on probation.

This time was a dead-end -- whatever.

And ideas on how to proceed would be appreciated.

Can you be a bit more specific?

Was this during a kid exchange? What was he mad about? Was he playing alpha games, trying to intimidate you?

What set him off?

It is legal to record any conversation in MN as long as one party knows they are being recorded.
The one party would be you in this case not your wife's ex.......

This. The probation officer can send him back to prison and the POS knows this.

Call back.   Complain.  You feel threatened, in many states that is enough.   If not a criminal/terrorist threat than at least harassment.   If the idiot has priors plus probation then I am at a loss.

State laws can vary but what was the means of communication and any way to prove it?

If department will not at least do a CYA report then they are potentially stupid.   See if you can at least document the fact that they responded to a call for service and look into a restraining order.

This. And call his PO. I'm surprised your complaint wasn't taken seriously. I'd follow up on it, as it sounds like someone made a bad call.

To be fair, it's a lot of paperwork.... On a computer... Like a paragraph or two... Maybe followed up with a phone call or email to the guys PO.

The coffee at the local 7-11 is waiting.

Yeah, but what if someone were to whine to their local news station. Or the family of the late OP were to whine. That's more BS to deal with. I can't think this is laziness. It just seems like a garden variety bad call. Shit happens. It just needs a little follow up, I bet.

Make contact with him under the guise of the whole thing being a misunderstanding.

Record the call.

Do not be the one to escalate anything. Just say " Hey, I wanted to get with you about this thing we had . Look, I know things are stressful sometimes, but there are kids involved and we need to try and keep all of this under the surface around the kids. "  or some BS like that. Just get the ball rolling. Either he'll apologize and you know the threat isn't real, or, he'll blow up. If he blows up, then you take the tape to his PO.

Done

It's usually waffles at the Waffle House.
