THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
Back story:
We have four people on our second shift custodial. We work Mon-Fri, 2-10:30pm. This one worker was hired awhile ago on this schedule. A little over a year ago this worker(after she was working here for more than a year) became a Seventh Day Adventist(SDA). The employer was able to accommodate. Since our second shift Warehouse worked Sunday-Thursday, That's when this person worked. No problems. We would have to do just a couple things in their area(garbage's, don't stink over the weekend) and they would finish on Sunday.

Now the warehouse changes they're schedule during the summer(slow time) to four ten hour days. Last year they worked Sun-Wed. This year they decided to work Mon-Thurs.

Our boss had a meeting with all of us and talked about what we can do as far a accommodating this person, since they will not be able to work on Sunday.

The Idea was brought up about this person working 4 tens, Mon- Thurs. And we would have to do all their work on friday. Making it like someone taking every Friday off for vacation.
If this happens, I feel and other do to that it will put extra work on us. And it doesn't seem fair.

Ideally we would like this person to work Mon-Thurs and come in on friday for a few hours to get their basic stuff done so we don't have to worry about it, and still leave in time for the Sabboth before sundown.

Can our employer tell this person to work a certain schedule as long as it doesn't interfer with the Sabboth and if they don't agree, be terminated? Will the religion discrimination fall in this scenario?

I don't want this person throwing the religion card if our employer take action, and I am all for her beliefs, But I get the feeling this person is using their religion to work whatever schedule they want and think they won't be terminated for it.

Any thoughts?
Hope this make sense.

I think you have it right. If it doesnt interefere with their worship, than work it or quit.

Is MN a "right to work" state?

The employer has a right to post what hours is needed for the job, the SDA has a right to seek different employment if it occurs during her sabbath.

instead of all your idiotic ideas about lawsuits, have you just actually asked the person if they can manage this schedule?
