Was out for a hike around the hills. Found this gem of a creepy little cave. It's getting dark and it was dark inside but looked to be at least 20 or some odd feet down + more and a roof of about 4-5 feet. Should I investigate? The entrance was covered in sage brush to where it was invisible to anything that wasn't standing right next to the entrance. Cleared out musty, rotten sage that was about 4 feet deep and it's still creepy. Spider webs and fungus underneath the last layer of sage that scared the shit out of me because as ARFKOM knows, we all hate fucking spiders. No way am I going inside but I must investigate. Fo?
Outside with most of the sage brush cleared away. Outside with all the sage brush cleared away. Camera fail - low battery meant I could only get three more shots without the flash - this adds to the mystery. Another shot - I could hear a earth crunching and screams of the damned. Final shot - CAVING GEAR - Underneath the flannel was a tight, fitted button up shirt, the bandanna is cloth napkin I took off my table, couldn't find my gloves fast enough so I used TWO pairs of Hanes socks - they are like the multitool of mens clothing and two pairs guarantee no spiders can bite through the kevlar like cotton material. Flashlight is the Fenix TK11. This. is. win. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=reno,+nv+89512&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=43.848534,92.197266&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Reno,+Washoe,+Nevada+89512&ll=39.564613,-119.805012&spn=0.000654,0.001407&t=h&z=20 UPDATE Went back again since it was not raining today. The opening of the lip is 4 feet and then the tunnel goes down about 5 feet before it hits the bottom which is relatively level. From side to side it's about 5-6feet, ceiling is 6 feet and from the bottom of the lip to the end is about a 12-15 feet. Tooling marks could be seen along the sides and the rear. No veins of quartz could be seen. From the bottom to ground level is about 15-20 feet of rock and creepy fucking spiders live in the ceiling which spooked me and I ran. No respiratory issues noticed, strong smell of fungus and mold. 4 chunks of ceiling were missing which were found on the floor of the cave. Definitely an exploration drift. How do I test for air flow to make sure extended trips won't kill me? |

Putting on spider proof shit and getting my safety goggles. Should I just recruit the neighborhood children to go explore it?

Wait until daytime. Take pics and bring someone with you. Sounds cool.

Thanks, now I'm scared of the mole people. I have my caving gear on which consists of an old beanie a button up collared shirt and my fenix tk11. I have a bandana on the protect my vital kissing instruments from the effects of rabid cave spiders. This is going to be so full of win!

ETA: Couldnt have been much of an exploaration to have 30 minutes round trip and 25 minutes between 'leaving' and being 'back'. |

Should I investigate? What do you mean, 'should I investigate?' Get in there and don't come back without a bitchin status report. |

You do realize it's fucking creepy and sleestaks and cthulu and shit live underground right? I wouldn't even put my fucking hand in the goddamn thing and my flashlight holding wench sucked at keeping the entrance illuminated to make sure they didn't pull me in. I got the pics, I got the fuck out. |

That doesn't look like much of a cave.
You said it drops down 20ft? |

Quoted: Mine=death. This. Deadly gas, collapses, unknown pitfalls. Don't be an idiot. |
|
Brush almost looks like it was piled there intentionally to hide the cave. It's probably full of hookers and blow.
|
|
Clear the way with a molotov cocktail FLAMETHROWER first. Eliminates gas and mole folks.

Could be an old mine shaft. In the earlier days a lot of the miners just followed a vein and did not excavate any more than they had to. When my ex BIL and I were prospecting we went in some of the old mines. We went in with oxygen because you can gets pockets of contaminated air. We also always left someone on the outside. Whatever you do be careful and don't go it alone.
If it looks like it was dug out, as in a mine, you can check the state records for any claims that were filed. Don't know about there but in Oregon you can request records for certain grid sections and get copies of the claim records going back for over 100yrs. If the claim hasn't been maintained, which is likely, it's only a small fee to file and then go see what you can find... Would be interesting if you do come back and update? |
