What type of thermometer are you using?

If it is an electric one, the error on them varies.

I thought that was in the normal range... off to check.

ETA: Huh... Pretty far off. Good thing I ain't a medical professional.

You should probably seek professional help. RFN.

You're assuming room temperature...
Link Posted: 1/25/2010 7:38:46 AM EDT
That is fairly normal as long as you're a healthy 2 hour-old corpse.

* Diabetes
* Adrenal gland insufficiency (Addison's disease)
* Hypothalamus dysfunction

* Kidney failure
* Widespread infection (sepsis)
* Excessive use of alcohol or illicit drugs

Or you could be fine who knows.

There will be a guy along shortly with a much more accurate liver thermometer
Link Posted: 1/25/2010 7:42:51 AM EDT
....... its normal for a reptile maybe,
Link Posted: 1/25/2010 7:43:13 AM EDT
My normal body temperature is around 96 degrees. You could just have a normally low temp.
Link Posted: 1/25/2010 7:43:13 AM EDT
That's about coma territory IIRC. Either you're going to die, your digi thermo is broken or you drank something before you took your temp.

Where did you take you temperature (oral, ear canal, temporal)? The ear is usually cooler and generally difficult to get an accurate temp.
Link Posted: 1/25/2010 7:45:49 AM EDT
98.6 is the optimum temperature for cellular mitosis. People's temps AVERAGE 98 degrees. Some people have a "normal" body temp as low as 97.2. Yours is most likely due to a fauly thermometer. Get an old glass-type. You can't fool those. Or even a centigrade thermometer like you see on fish tanks, you know, the strip kind you lay on your forehead.
Link Posted: 1/25/2010 7:46:15 AM EDT
my bet is a shitty thermometer

Borderline hypothermia comes to mind. You might want to warm up a bit. Got a hot tub?

Oral. Now its reading 96.6. I think it may be a bunk therm

Link Posted: 1/25/2010 7:50:42 AM EDT
Meh, mine has always hovered around 97.
Link Posted: 1/25/2010 7:51:51 AM EDT
Depends on your age, and other factors.

My normal temp is about two degrees lower than 98.6

The last time I asked when my body temp was going to return to "normal", the cute little nurse looked at me and said "a lower body temp is not unusual if you're older".

I said "I'm 53, not elderly!"

She said "um, yeah..."

But you, you're probably a zombie that just hasn't turned...yet.
Or your chinese digital thermometer is fooked.

That is way too low, your thermometer is bad.

IF you were actually at 95.8 degrees fahrenheit you would not be typing...nor would you be thinking about typing.

You would be shivering uncontrollably, your extremities would be shutting down and your physical movements would be uncoordinated, your speech would be slurred...

Seek medical attention RFN.

Check it with a good quality thermometer. Don't take your temperature orally within 15-20 minutes after you drink or eat something because that can significantly affect the reading.

A rectal reading is usually going to be more accurate anyway!

95.8 is waaaaaaaaaay too low, but some people's "normal" (base) body temp varies from the generally accepted 98.6. For example, my base temp is a bit lower, around 98.
Link Posted: 1/25/2010 8:01:45 AM EDT
Change the plastic cover on the ear piece on the digital thermometer.
Link Posted: 1/25/2010 8:05:50 AM EDT
Sounds like a bad thermometer, but if you are feeling bad going to the doctor is your best bet.

That was my question. Are you using a oral, or rectal thermometer?

How can you tell the difference?

Taste.

You're a dead man, then.

Link Posted: 1/25/2010 8:49:00 AM EDT
oral, ear, armpit, forehead. all crap, with huge variations.

There is only one accurate temp, core, and that is taken RECTALLY.

Bend over for accuracy

Chances are good you are within the normal range, which can vary from 98.6 by 1 to 2 degrees in either direction.

I won't bother with a differential diagnosis, just see your doc if you feel like crap.

If you normally run 98, and you took some advil, you might be normal with 96.5 or 97.
