The .600 Overkill was designed by Robert Garnick of Las Vegas, Nevada. It was intended to be the largest bullet that was able to fit in the CZ550, and was designed specifically for the purpose of elephant hunting. The CZ550 is able to fit 2 cartridges, with slight alterations. With solid brass bullets, the .600 overkill is able to penetrate 6 feet (1.8 m) into solid oak.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.600_Overkill Got yer attention yet? The .600 Overkill fires a 900-grain (58 g) bullet at more than 2,400 FPS, At this level of power, as the bullet spins down the barrel, the rifle is torqued in the opposite direction, often twisting the rifle out of the shooter's hand. Recoil in standard-weight hunting rifles (10 lbs. or less) is far beyond what most shooters will tolerate. Holy shnikies!  The .600 Overkill case originated from the .600 Nitro Express. The rim was removed from the .600 Nitro Express and a belt was added for headspacing purposes. A 0.640" rebated rim was cut on the case - the same size used by the .505 Gibbs. The case walls were left straight for a 3.0 inch case and a 3.75 inch cartridge overall length. Custom 3 groove barrels with 1:16 twist are made by Pac-Nor Barrels of Brookings, Oregon. A 3-groove barrel with a 1:16" twist was chosen to keep pressures low and permit the cartridge to achieve higher velocities than would be otherwise possible. This scheme seems to have worked because with the same powder charge and bullet, the .600 Overkill achieves about 75 FPS more velocity than the .600 Nitro Express. Talk about a Brontosaurus bruiser! In terms of overall energy, the .577 T-Rex may have more, but the idea of shooting solid 600gr .600 Nitro bullets @ 2400 FPS is downright impressive. ...and i'm not forgetting our own howngrown AR15.commer, hubel458, from this thread:

that is insane, i like a big gun as much as the next guy but damn.
Wouldn't it just be easier to use a .50 bmg with a big ass brake on the end to take up all that recoil? |

Lemme get this straight all that expense and custom wildcat ammo, not that .600 Nitro is all that common, for 75fps? Or is that a misprint..... off to google.

When someone asked him about it, he said that he used to shoot a 300 Weatherby but "It wasnt enough"! Dont know what the hell he was shooting but there damn sure isnt anything in Oklahoma that needs that. Especially in a sporter weight rifle. The best part was, I watched him shoot at least 40 rounds, and only put a single round into his 16 X 24" target (100 yards from a bench!) It doesnt matter how much power you have, if you arent putting it into the boiler room, you might as well be using a fly swatter. |

I don't give too much thought when launching 400 grainers @ 2525 fps out of my .416 Rigby, but I'd probably take a raincheck (and it would have to be enough rain to get Noah to notice) before I shouldered a platform capable of 900 grains @ 2400 fps.

The .700H was designed by the same person who designed the 12 gauge from hell. I've been in touch with him, and bought a round of 12 gauge FH from him. On the nitroexpress.com big bore rifle forum there's a long thread about it, and the 12 isn't big enough anymore. IIRC he's developing a 190 gauge from hell, using a 4 inch brass case. He posts here from time to time too, I'm sure he'll drop in if he hasn't already(haven't read the whole thread yet). Also, the .700HE is much cheaper to shoot than the .700NE, which was his goal all along. Something like a third the price, meaning reloading is still a must, but it's not $100 each time you pull the trigger either. ETA-I'd REALLY like to shoot the 12 gauge from hell-according to one email I got from him, recoil from a 14 pound gun is similar to a goose load from an 870-weight gun.Punishing, but tolerable. |

Now, 3 1/2 inch )) Buckshot, fired from a Remington 887 on the other hand are painful. The recoil of goose loads is something that creeps up on you if you miss a lot-by the end of a bad day my shoulder is killing me, but it's not all that noticeable in the field. |

The couple of people that I have met that have .30 - 378s have had no business owning them. They had to have a good friend of mine and I sight them in. Bore life is around 1 to 2 thousand rounds if you're lucky. I swear to the Lord above that the bullet gets to the target before the muzzle blast gets to your ears. I've never shot anything in that caliber range that was so fast in my life. ( the .22-250 is, of course, psychotically fast...but it's a .22 ) |
