I'm guessing for a P0440 Incorrect purge flow. Will need a new purge control solenoid valve to fix. Or, if its a V6, no signal from the knock sensor because a mouse ate through the wire in the engine valley.

Keep in mind, if you are taping over the light, that it will probably still fail an emissions test if that is required where you live.  Part of the test is verifying the check engine light works, but does not stay on.

Don't feel bad reptar, All the dealers charge a steep diagnostic charge. I bought my first Snap on "brick" in 88 or 89 and I think dealers were charging 45-50 for a hook up not long after that.


I just up-dated my own personal scanner.....just over a grand.   cars are much different than they used to be, a new car is a very sophisticated piece of equipment with as many as a dozen [or more] processors ..working on these things takes training and tools.....which translates into bucks.
that is why repairs cost so much sometimes...wanna whine about it?...take it to the .gov   all the regulations the manufacturers must meet come from ther.


Shop owner here.  I totally agree with you.  I have been looking into the scan tool options for upgrade.  SnapOn Modis 8 grand.  That is a LOT of check engines to diag before that gets paid off.



We've got a Modis as well. It needs upgraded about every 6 months or so, costs around $500 or so every time. Then we've got our Honda and our Nissan, and they charge us monthly. Nissan recently sent us Consult-III, which is one of those toughbook laptops, that's our new scanner. It ran us 15K, no joke. Lots of money wrapped up in diagnotic equipment, but what are you gonna do?

Disconnect the battery for a little bit and then reconnect it. That should take care of that damn light for a little while.

Yes, this still works. Even on a brand new car, Honda calls it the SCS line. But you have to know how to read them, and then look them up and such. PIA really, only time I use it anymore is of course on the old cars, and on the 2 or 3 new ones that have come in struck by lightning. The scanners tend not to work properly on those vehicles, so I've had to flash the codes out to see what to replace.

Anyway, back on topic, get back to us ASAP as to what code it is. Unless it's something obvious like an evap leak from you leaving the gas cap loose, I'll put the code through my Honda database and we'll figure out what's going on with it.

Fucking shit!!!!!  8K for a scan tool then updates every six months at 500 a pop?  Fucking fuckity fuck!  Well, I can promise that is not happening at this shop till next year.

Yep they saved me $90, that is what the Dodge dealership wanted to hook it up to the tester. Advanced did it for free.



On that note, you wouldn't happen to be missing your gas cap would you? That is why my light came on in my Jeep. $9 gas cap took care of it.

On my truck the light comes on when the speedometer has stopped working for several minutes.  To fix it, I snap the "glass" in front of the speedo or tap on the top of the dash.  the Speedo comes back and about 20 seconds lataer the check engine light goes out.  I don't even have  to go to the free check places.

We've got a Modis as well. It needs upgraded about every 6 months or so, costs around $500 or so every time. Then we've got our Honda and our Nissan, and they charge us monthly. Nissan recently sent us Consult-III, which is one of those toughbook laptops, that's our new scanner. It ran us 15K, no joke. Lots of money wrapped up in diagnotic equipment, but what are you gonna do?


So are the $50-100 units I'm tempted to buy just junk?

Well, since we still don't know the exact code, I can't say for sure. However, There is a service news out in the Honda database for having either a code P2646 or P2647 (VTEC oil pressure switch circuit low voltage and High voltage), and Honda says replacing the VTEC switch usually repairs that problem. This is for 4 cylinder Accords only. But, your symptoms on it not idleing right doesn't really have anything to do with the VTEC system, so you may have 2 seperate problems.

The one thing that always causes VTEC system malfuctions is low oil. I know it's simple, but I see it a lot in the shop, so make sure you keep on that.

Ok, take it to a shop let them do all the work on it and charge alot of money for the same exact thing you can do yourself. Cars have computers in them now a days. They will pretty much tell what exactly is wrong with them anymore. More than likely it's a valve or sensor of some kind.

Thanks for the info. It is a 4cylinder, he said something about the pressure switch circuit not working. I really hope this fixes it, I am short on time these days.

To all you guys bitching about paying a diagnosis fee from a shop, let me give you a little perspective from the "other side of the fence."  I work on German autos for a living,  and am paid by the billable hour not by the clock.  We have a very well run little shop, that's been in business for 40 years, and we repair cars the honest way - we diagnose the root cause of a problem and fix it, and if we are wrong we eat it not the customer.  All that being said, our shop charges near $100 for a standard diagnosis that doesn't require complex disassembly or electrical tracing unless we can do that in the hour the customer is paying for.  The Mercedes computer system we use cost over $6,000 by itself, and we have computer scanners for Mercedes, BMW, Volkswagen and Audi.  On top of that, each of us as technicians have training that costs (we go to schools a couple times a year that cost around $1,300 a weekend per person) and we all have tools that are generally expensive (the average mechanic has $15,000 invested in his box and tools).  If you pay us to scan your check engine light, we give you a diagnosis that we stand by - if we call an oxygen sensor, it will fix the problem or we clearly state up front before you pay any further that it is a problem that will have to be fixed to further diagnose.  No hidden charges, and if we change a part that we find isn't bad, we will take it off and not charge you for it.  Period.  Not many shops work that way, but we have the experience and competence as a shop to work that way.  We get people who have tried to diagnose their own problems, and usually about 20% of them are right (usually if the diagnosis is simple or if they are a car enthusiast who is fairly knowledgeable about  their car and do some of their own basis maintenance).  If they bring their own "diagnosis" we will either waive the diagnosis charge and do their requested work with no guarantees other than waranteeing our labor and parts we supply, or more commonly, they will decide to let us diagnose to take the risk off of them.  We are paid for our expertise, the same as any other skilled person.  If you can do your own work correctly, safely, and without "throwing parts at the problem" to diagnose your car, great - you will save yourself countless dollars over the course of car ownership.  Otherwise, take your car to a reputable shop that can fix (not just work on) car.

Those work fine for retrieving and clearing DTCs.  I have one like that, 'cause it's quick and easy to use just to clear codes.

I'm primarily a Ford guy, the meat and potatoes of what I use for diagnosing, I've got about $4K tied up in for the communication interface, cables, laptop, Windows Mobile pocket PC, etc. and a $485/year software license.  The shop has the whole kit which was about $12-13K if I remember right.


There is a HUGE difference between a code reader ($50 or so) and a scan tool that the professionals use for $10K.   A code  reader will tell you what check engine code tripped the SES / CE light.  The scan tool can tell you a thousand times more information then the code reader.  A scan tool can shut off cylinders, injectors, spark plugs ect... and give real time information from every sensor in the car.  To watch a tech use one is pretty impressive.  

I normally will clear a code and then see if the code comes back before doing any kind of work to the car.  Sometimes the computers just pick up a just happened once event and may not ever happen again.   I only get concerned about the check light when the car is also not running normal.

I went to a local shop. I have been going there for years and they are about as honest as I have been able to find. Its high volume and they do not remember you but they have been honest as far as I can tell with me so far. I use them exclusively for everything. So far so good. Those computers nowadays indeed will tell you a lot of information.  Interpreting that information, and determining what failed, sometimes that ain't so easy.


I dont know about you Quintin but at my shop about a third of the time the code has almost nothing to do with the part actually needing replacing.  It points you in the right direction but not always the right part.

  I gave up on the Snap On diagnostics a couple years ago. Bought a Bosch Mastertech VCI. So far I have been really happy with it. Downside......maybe.....is that it works in conjunction with a laptop. Upside of this is, it is fast.....really fast. Also being able to flash our vehicles is great. I have had some guys come back in after a re flash saying some other driveability concerns were gone and they were really happy. It allows you to take an hour plus movie. Get back to the shop and view it in user selectable display options.  The unit was about 3K. The subscriptions run around 1500. Then the cost of the computer. I have mine on a laptop and a desktop. I believe you can get three licenses. Also has wireless capability that I haven't tried yet. Take a look.  Oh yeah, it also has great coverage on the european stuff. We have a couple bmw's around here, as well as some other German stuff.

I could retire if I had a dollar for every EGR valve Autozone has sold someone on their 4.6 liter Ford with an insufficient EGR flow code, or every O2 sensor they've sold someone who had lean codes.

Auto-Zone, Advanced Auto Parts, etc.... will read your code for free.

The symptoms you are describing could be one of several things- the cam shaft sensor, the crank shaft sensor,  a problem in the computer/chip (or a couple of other possibilities)

FYI......I had a P0440 over a bad EGR gasket. EGR good-gasket bad =P0440.
