Im going to be shooting in an area where it is legal to do so, but dont want to disturb neighbors. Using normal ammo, how loud is .22LR out of a handgun, like a ruger or buckmark?

For reference, I have a .22 rifle with something on the order of a 30 inch barrel, and using 22 shorts, I can hardly even hear it if Im in the house and its fired outside. Normal LR's are a little louder, but not really much louder than a high powered air rifle. Even then, I think most of that 'loudness' comes from my proximity to the gun being fired.

So yeah, just how loud is a .22 handgun, for the most part?

How wide open are area are you talking? Super Kolibri out of a handgun in a residential neighborhood is pretty loud, compared to out in the middle of a farmer's field.

You can hear them pretty well in a house 100 feet away is my experience. They do not really disturb anyone though. Except for rabid anti's. But that is to be expected.

It's surprisingly loud out of a pistol. Your neighbors will definitely notice.

Expect it to be quite a bit louder than what you're used to with your rifle.

I would not call a handgun chambered in .22lr a "quiet alternative" to many other firearms, if noise is a concern.

Quite a bit louder than out of a rifle, any neighbors withing 50yds will likely be annoyed. Subsonics will be a little less noisy, but I'd check with the neighbors first anyway just to make sure they don't call the fuzz.

Gamo recently came out with a suppressed air-rifle just for this application, if you don't mind practicing with an air-rifle. No tax stamp needed.

Spring piston airguns are LOUD AS HELL!
You have never even fired one, have you?

Yep. I've been shooting them for about 20 years. They sound like "bronnnk", very, very loud.

Spring Piston airguns arent THAT loud.

I mean they have a loud "break the silence" pop, but alongside actual firearms, or firecrackers, I find them to be pretty subtle.

They don't pop at all. They go "bronnk" very loudly. The sound of the spring is louder than the supersonic crack.

And I never said they were as loud as a firearm, just that they are loud. As hell. And suppressors on precharged pneumatic airguns are the shit. Spring piston guns don't benefit from a suppressor at all because of the BRONNKing.

Also, a .22 pistol does not sound like a 9mm at all. It's louder than a .22 rifle, but not anywhere near as loud as a 9mm.

Not in my experience. The rifle is loud. The flight of the projectile is silent.

I don't feel so bad now knowing I'm not the only one who did that. I set some soda cans up on a berm about 15 or 20 yards away in the front yard, broke my shiny new P22 out and thinking that it wouldn't be that loud (due to past experience with a Marlin 60 rifle).

I got a lot of funny looks from the neighbors that day. Damn, that thing is really loud.

to compare: .22 pistol about as loud as a 12 ga, maybe same as a 9mm, I think it's not as loud as a 40/45, but not by much. I'd consider them all roughly the same.

absoute scale: will make your ears ring, a few shots may actually cause pain in your ears w/o hearing protection.

Are we talking NAA Mini or a Ruger Charger? Both are loud. I fired the super colbri's out of my .22 Marlin 81DL and sounded like they were suppressed, then shot one out of my 4" MK II and closed the door and the curtains and hunkered down for the cops to come.

Wait until your neighbors are mowing their lawn, whipping their weeds, or blowing their leaves. Fire away, they won't hear a thing, but you should use hearing protection.

I shot a .22 snub nosed revolver. My ears REALLY rang. I was surprised at how loud the damn thing was.
