[ARCHIVED THREAD] - How much should it cost to fence 1/2 acre???

I have a rectangular shaped 1/2 acre sized lot. I want to fence the entire thing, including an two gates large enough for vehicles to drive through. I want it to be 6 foot tall and not able to be seen through.

I called a fence company, rough estimate was $13,000 + lube for the anal raping.

What do you think?

Most of it would be labor costs I'm guessing. Depends on material too wood, iron, aluminum will cost a hell of a lot more than cyclone fencing+concrete+post.

Cyclone fencing is not that difficult to put up niether are wood picket fences, I have worked doing both.

A brick fence would be assrape expensive.

13K is not out of line for a wood privacy fence.

Well I don't want wood if it's gonna cost $13000. I'd be fine with sheets of plywood nailed to 4x4s but I dont think my neighbors would appreciate that

13K is not out of line for a wood privacy fence.

That's what I'm thinking. 6 feet tall, and privacy would require a lot of lumber.

I built one myself at a prior home we owned. It was on an 1/8th of an acre, and I did a 6 foot curved picket with pressure treated lumber. I only had to do 2 sides, as the home was the border on one side, and the back already had a fence. For that was around $1,000 in materials. 4 sides, 1/2 acre, 6 ft high, pressure treated, and privacy. Yeah, that would be expensive.

For that much fence, I'd go with a split rail - depending on what it's for, exactly.

EDIT: Scratch that. I missed the need for a privacy fence. Bend over and grab your ankles, because that's a LOT of wood.

lumber prices aren't that high right now, I'd look into doing it myself. I would use 2x6's instead of 2x4's for the cross bracing because the 2x4's seem to sag under the weight of a privacy fence over time.

ETA: screws for everything, no nails. We did it this way and maint. is easy as shit when a slat breaks. It literally takes 30 seconds.

"Rectangular" doesn't tell me anything.

A rectangle can be many different lengths and widths and they all have different perimeters.

Anyway, I would bid that for about a 675' fence with gates, not counting removing existing or dealing with ground that has alot of roots or large rocks.

And, yes, that is as cheap as a privacy fence gets. As stated, cyclone fencing is a bit cheaper, but does nothing for privacy.

Unless you are rural/outside of the city limits there are probably zoning regs against it. My worry would be the neighbors dumbass kids or pets. It is too easy to sue somebody now.

I'd go 4-6 foot cyclone fence depending on if I had large dogs. Somewhat inset on the property to avoid zoning gripes/conflicts with the neighbors.

half acre = ~ 100' x 215' = 630 lineal feet x say $15/lf = $9450

i just used $15/lf which is a pretty heavy unit price for a cedar or p.t. wood fence

Have you looked into the chain link fence with the plastic slats in the links?

I put this up at my house and I really like how it works. It was much less expensive than wood privacy but you can still see thru the links between the slats. It was a toss up to go with a complete privacy fence or save on the cash. I decided to save about 600 on my fence and let the neighbors peek thru the slats if they wanted to see into my back yard if they worked at it.

I put up up 350 feet of 6 foot privacy fence and it cost me right around $2500 in materials and gave a buddy a few hundred for helping me put it up.

All 4x4 fence post are cemented into the ground.

Material was from home depot and found a 10% off coupon.

600 linear feet? Plywood is $15 a sheet which is 4 linear feet. Treated? Looking at $6 per linear feet. And it will look like hammered dog poop and would last 5 years, tops.

You have some aversion to labor? Or you aren't handy with tools? $22 per linear foot with 2 gates sounds about right.

Wear a speedo when in the yard, eventually they'll help pay for a privacy fence.

yeah, I think the last I heard in my area 18/foot was the standard rate.
