In terms of accuracy and reliability, what do you consider to be the best .45 ACP semi-auto available today –– and why so? (There are so many platforms and manufacturers that I'm not even going to attempt a poll.)

Are you attempting to purchase the best or is this just another quagmire?

oh God, here we go....

Before this is over someone will have mentioned every single manufacturer as "the best".

IMO the SIG P220.

I used to have a couple of them; they were accurate, extremely reliable, and a joy to shoot.

Everyone that posts 1911 should be banned if they don't list a make and model.

I will throw this out there and get an obscure one out of the way:

CZ-97b. I know there are better makes out there, I just love mine. Great value for the money.

If they were so great, why did you get rid of them? Let me guess. So you could get a Glock?

G21

my para GI is more reliable than my colt series 70

I would go with glock 21 with a 6" kkm barrel.

HK45.

Honorable mentions:

Les Bear Thunder Ranch Special (yes, that's a 1911).

Sig P220 (West German only).

I absolutely love my Para P14 LTD

Not very common but you can still buy them and they kick the shit out of almost all 45's. Smith Performance Center pistols are among the very best. Extremely durable, reliable and accurate:

There are a lot better models out there but my two (and previously owned S&W's) have all been 100%... 18.5 springs, WC, CMC, and Brown mags.

*waiting for my VZ grips which is why my blued models doesn't have any grips on it...

I absolutely love my HK45, the grip is just freakin' awesome and it shoots really well also, and is pretty much unbreakable.

I had a Colt Combat Commander, that thing sucked donkey balls. I have a Springfield Loaded 1911, it's been flawless. I also have a CZ 97B, also flawless. Sometimes I think I prefer the CZ. It feels bigger in the hand than the 1911, due to the doublestack mag, but it handles and shoots great. I used to have a S&W 745, it ran like a top and was very accurate.
Link Posted: 5/13/2009 11:28:31 AM EDT
If you say 1911, then that will open a whole new can of worms.

Glock 21SF

Tough finish, supreme reliabilty, very accurate and holds plenty of ammo.
