My father recently gave me a gun that he picked up somewhere (He's 75 years old and does not shoot any longer.  I did not grow up with this gun and it does not hold sentimental value like some others I have do).  It's a Winchester Model 94AE 30-30 lever action rifle.  It's in good shape and doesn't seem to have been shot that much but, honestly, I have zero use for it.  I don't deer hunt and use my AR and others at the range.  If I was to contemplate selling it, what would be a fair price to someone yet get the full value out of it?  The serial # on it is 5553XXX.  From what I understand from Winchester, the rifle was made in 1988.  It's been a safe queen since day one and always will be.  I've thought about parting ways with it.  What do you think on value?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

On Gunbroker they usually sell for $350 to $400. I just sold one similar to yours for $400.

I bought one for $250 about 6 months ago. It was made about 1977, but it's elevator seems to be better made than a friends who was made in 1968.

Pre 1964 Model 94"s are sought after and worth a bit.

Keep it a while, buy some ammo, and learn to shoot it. You just might learn to love it.

It's a free gun that shoots fairly cheap and very available ammo. Nothing at all to hate about this rifle.

If  not, then sell it. A little wear and tear won't make much difference.

This I've heard (and seen first hand).  They are really expensive and very sought after.  The rifle I have needs a little bit of elbow great but it's in great shape for how old it is.

I'm liking this auction style thread.  Keep them coming.  I may just IM someone and say they can have it.

I wish I knew some of you.  I'd jump on 250 for one.

I paid a bit over 300 for a early 70s NON AE.

I'd bet you can get 400 on GB pretty easily.

They're not worth as much as one would think.  though, I would think it's worth $300 or a little more.

Keep it.  It didn't cost you a dime and it's one hell of a gun.  They are great fun to shoot.  I got my doe this year at 125yds with one with iron sights.

Lever actions are fun. I have a Rossi model 92 with the saddle ring in 357 cal.

If you don't need the money, keep in mind that they aren't making Winchester model 94's anymore. The value will keep going up. Granted, maybe not skyrocket anytime soon, but it will out pace inflation.

For real.  You don't seem to have much sentimental value with this rifle right now,  but in 20-30 years you may recall with great sadness the day you sold your grandfather's rifle.

I was never much of a lever action fan.  I preferred pointy bullets at maximum velocity from scoped rifles.  Then I won a 45-70 on a $10 raffle ticket.  A gun I never would have bought has become my favorite rifle.  I can't wait to get a 30-30.  I'd love to get a 32 Special and a 35 Remington, too.  I have two lever 22LRs and would buy another (or two) if the deal was good.

Lever guns are the 'assault rifles' of the 19th century.  They're relatively high capacity, lightweight, and have a fairly high rate of aimed fire.  In the hands of a competent rifleman, a 30-30 like you've got is one seriously deadly tool.

KEEP IT.

I didn't realize this.  Good thought.  Did they replace it with a different model or something?

I know I grew up with a 30-30 Marlin (with the gold trigger).  I'm sure everyone knows that gun.  Sad to say, some asshole broke into my house growing up (and we were on a farm and VERY rural) and stole everything my dad and I had (Browning .22, {2} Remington 1100's. the 30-30 Marlin, several handguns, you name it....)  That was around 1986 when kids wore their pants on their waist and usually acted like something.  That still urks me to this day.

Keep it,  I have 2 and they are fun to shoot.  I don't think big brother will come after them and they have taken more deer than practically any rifle around.

Is it a pre 64? I have one made in the late 30s and it is a beautifully made rifle. The action and trigger is smooth and sweet. Fit and finish is superb. Then I have one made in the 70s and the difference in quality is night and day. I'd keep it if I were you if it's a pre 64, they are great guns. If post 64, do what you like.

There are no Pre-64 AE's. 94AE's came out sometime in the 80's.

U.S. Repeating Arms, aka Winchester, is out of business.

Keep it and pass it down, I have a Parker side by side 10 gauge that was my great grandfathers, it will go to my oldest one day.
