Like the title says, they came home with largely dilated pupils.  I have no experience with alcohol, drugs or anything like that.  I have never been around anybody who does either.

Anybody know what some of the potential causes could be?

Could be something, could be nothing.

Mydriasis  is an excessive dilation of the pupil due to disease, trauma or drugs

Anything from opiates to Antihistamines to some antidepressants.

Many other drugs such as amphetamines and psychedelic drugs (LSD, psychedelic mushrooms, salvia divinorum, mescaline, and MDMA) are also known to cause mydriasis.

why is everyone saying LSD?  Have you ever even done acid?  Pot?  We must have some D.A.R.E occifers in here.  Pot = red eyes.

Dialated pupils?  I'd suspect pain pills (opiates)

If you still think its pot, offer her some cookies.  If it was acid, shed be smart enough NOT to go home and risk encountering a parent.  Shit is powerful

drugs, concussions and stress can cause that, but both of them at the same time? Either they got into a car accident or they were both doing drugs. I vote the latter.

You know, that reminds me of somebody. There was this slightly retarded friend that a bunch of my friends had. He apparently went downhill after he married some druggie chick who convinced him to go to gay clubs with her. After that he disappeared for a long time. Then when started showing back up in our lives again, his eyes were ALWAYS disturbingly super dialated and his teeth had rotted out of his head. He also became extremely skinny and never slept. o_O Meth is a very real possibility...

Cocaine!

You didnt notice any change in behavior? That would be the most obvious...

Ecstacy or some other hallucinogen.  More light being allowed in to give a betterr sensory experience.  X or LSD will be out of their system in 24 hrs unless it was cut with something like coke it might be detectable longer.  Were they laughing, crying or what?

Kind of on the same topic... I guess that's a good thing with me doing virtually every drug known to man..I can spot that shit from 20 miles away.  My parents were fucking idiots.

Is she acting unusual? Particularly giggly or energetic, reacting strangely to the environment, etc.? Dilation of the pupils can be caused by many drugs like LSD, MDMA/Ecstacy, amphetamines, psylocibin/magic mushrooms, and Salvia divinorum.

Since it's both of them I'd say probably not head trauma.

On the other hand, they could just have spent a lot of time in the dark and their eyes haven't adjusted yet.

You can check for normal pupil response with a penlight.

If you're seriously concerned about drugs (and it would take more evidence than one time coming home with large pupils to make me seriously concerned about drugs), you can probably get your daughter drug-tested.

LSD can dilate your pupils. Opioids, on the other hand, usually cause them to contract.

If they were on coke they wouldn't be able to shut up and their eyes would also be slightly blood shot.

LSD use would be very easy to determine. Get a scary mask and run in to the room screaming. If the initial shock doesn't go away in a few moments you know you just induced a bad trip.

ETA: Acid would be highly noticeable, uncontrollable smiling, fits of laughter, staring at things, odd behavior.

That is quite possibly some of the worst advice I have ever seen given on this board.  That is why I fully support it and await an AAR.

You do realize that his eyes are probably as wide and dialated as theirs are right now?

I played around quite a bit as a young teen with drugs, done a lot of acid, a lot of pot, lots of mushrooms etc.. Acid, and mushrooms dialated my pupils. As for going home on acid.. Yes, bad idea. My mother called me to let me know my grandmother got pinned to her car by a falling tree, I ended up going to the hospital tripping my ass off, lucky for me everyone was too concerned with my grandmother to notice, that was not a good experience.

99% chance she's high, probably weed....simple as that.  Not everyone gets red eyes when they smoke, plus eye drops can clear it up.

did she avoid contact with you when she got home, look really tired, quickly make a beeline to her room, hit up the kitchen for a snack?

Can't really say for certain that she was or wasn't doing something, I've been around enough people who do all sorts of different drugs to know what to look for.
