I don't know about her problems, but I decided that I'd post my experience... I'm going out on a limb a bit here...
Some time ago, I was diagnosed with Severe Clinical Depression. Let me just tell you it's not fun. I was never institutionalized, or committed, as that would have made me worse, and I was not a harm to myself, nor society.
Most "Professionals" would tell you to take medication from a psychiatrist (Shrink), or seek therapy from a psychologist. I, however, think the best thing to do is take both routes. By seeking out help from a psychiatrist, one could almost immediately begin feeling better due to meds; And by seeing a psychologist, one could realize there were not only biological (clinical) things affecting their life, but circumstantial things upsetting them.
It takes about a year or more to crawl out of depression's hole, and the best way to do it is to confront your problems in your life, SEEK HELP, surround yourself with close friends, and let time handle the rest.
Also, keep her away from shooting as a hobby if she's depressed! I kept away from firearms until about last winter, when I was totally "cured". Then during last spring, I really started to get back into shooting as a hobby/sport like when I was younger. Shooting is one of the few things that still makes me happy! The fact that I can SEE myself IMPROVING at something cheers me up! Who cares what it is, as long as I know I'm IMPROVING MYSELF at something.

PS. Now, like you, I have a depressed friend, and I'm trying hard to help her through her times.
