The 60's movement is ultimitly responsable for the collaspe of our second amendment rights(not privilage for all you anti's out there). Tom Hayden, member of the Chicago seven and Bill "Bubba" Clinton are just two examples. These people(I use the term lightly) stood strongly against America in the 60's. They didn't bathe, lived in communes, and protested not the war, but the soldiers who fought. Then when all was forgotten, the movement had died(so we though), and the war was over, these hippies slid into seats of Congress, and the White House. Once in position, they pushed all their hippie bull$hit on us. Social programs(this is a gentle euphamizem for re-distrubtion of wealth from those who produce to those who's only contribution to society is the greenhouse effect - hippies)and most importantly, gun control. You see, you can't have peace and love if everyone's enjoying black rifles, red meat, and two-stroke engines. So next time you see one of these new generation hippies, be sure to show them your real expensive, self-loading rifle or pistol. When they attempt to turn you in, just hide your weapon under a bar of soap, they'll never find it. ENJOY !

what a crock. i was there, did NOT do that. this is a generalization that paints a generation with the same brush. just like all generations, the slugs that know what is best for you 'float' to the top, the rest are out there doing what it takes to keep the world turning. the flag burners, draft dodgers, protesters and other (insert color)trash were nothing but shills being used to advance the world's communist and socialist causes. they were not revered or respected or liked, but were hated for what they were and what they were doing to our way of life by those that were carrying the load. they were also considered by most of us as traitors for rallying with our enemies while our soldiers were being killed, but as now they got the media coverage. even then, they were looking for the easy way out and a free ride at the expense of the rest of us. just my opinion.

Sorry. You really missed it. The Vietnam war needed to be stopped.
Link Posted: 12/2/2001 2:58:07 PM EDT
Some of us who protested the Vietnam war, still gave respect to the men who fought, were wounded or not, and/or died there. I wore moratorium arm bands and was kicked out of school for it 4 times. I protested the war then, only because I was too young to see/verify a communist threat to the U.S. Sorta turned out that the commies did get S. Vietnam, but failed to overcome the U.S. Anyway, I attended far too many funerals at the VA cemetary and still to this day don't think we needed to be there. I had long hair, listened to rock music, but carried a Republican card. and shot then and shoot today. Please do not propose to group all of us into a stereotype, as the anti-guns group us shooters into a stereotype. Cheers

I'm a white trash hippie. I have six AKs in the closet, an M1a and a couple of other guns. I think I'll go "show them to myself." Great idea dude. [8P] -SS

Gunsnob, I think I know what you're trying to say. I went to Berk' (briefly) couldn't stand it and left. Most of the people were VERY anti-gun. Had many arguements with a bunch of close-minded (who thought they were open-minded) liberal hippy wannabes who were too young to see the Dead when Jerry was alive.

I was there. All I know is that there was a lot of drugs and sex floating around free for the taking. Nothing wrong there and I certainly enjoyed it. Maybe GUNSNOB is pissed because he didn't get his share.
Link Posted: 12/2/2001 3:41:39 PM EDT
I never protested the Vietnam War, at least not the fact that we were fighting there. Now the manner in which 'the best and the brightest' chose to throw away any chance at victory, that was something that should have been protested. If you say that the War in Vietnam could not have been won by the United States and the Republic of South Vietnam, upon what do you base that belief? I'd say we 'won' the Korean War, by keeping the Red Chinese and their puppets out of the South. South Vietnam could still have been free, but we'll never know because the generation of leaders that Kennedy spoke about 'paying any price, bearing any burden' in his Inaugural Speech, pretty much decided they weren't going to pay or bear anything! Not for their own country and certainly not for a malaria-ridden little backwater of a place called Vietnam! Eric The(Hippie-Dippie)Hun[>]:)]

80 Gratefull Dead shows huh? I'm sorry. I can't believe as a gun owner you'd give that much money to a bunch of left wing crapholes like them. They were nothing but a bunch of hypocritical hippy elitists raking in millions of dollars off their homeless stalkers. Jerry was a piece of shit. Very Greatfull that he's dead. Man I hate hippies! BTW Gunsnob, I like the line about the Social Programs being a gentle term for redistribution of wealth. I don't think I could of put it much better.

Wow. What a touchie subject. I am as conservative as they come. Did we belong in Viet Nam? I don't know. Perhaps if we'd executed it differently? I am a Gen-X'er. Baby boomers outnumber us like 8 to 1. Generation Y will outnumber us about 12 to 1. We are a strange mix of the two I think. Bush really speaks to me and my generation unlike any President before. You might be surprised how many of us young-uns value conservative ideals. Too bad there is no emphasis on the writings of Thomas Paine or Thomas Jefferson in schools anymore. It seems they are teaching my children a ton of PC Bull$hit. I feel pretty much the same way about liberals as some of you. I don't believe they have their feet on the ground enough to understand reality. Why don't they consider the lessons of history when they promote their elitist policies? Don't get me started. But I think the 60's were a different time. Kind of like labor unions, whose time was needed (BUT DEFINITELY GONE!), but hippies should be extinct like the dodo. Especially now, I think Americans should embrace our heritage of God, freedom, responsiblity, and even that evil gun ownership. And yes, I believe you have the right to disagree with those ideals as an American. That is what freedom is about. Just don't f$ck with the constitution or we'll come after ya.

seamusmcoi, I see from my "punk" thread that you and I share the same taste in hardcore and oi. But I as well went to over 30 Dead shows, still go see Bobby and Phil and cried like a member of my own family died when Jerry passed. Listening to a cool "Darkstar" as I write. Music flows, it's already out there, some just know how to capture it from the sky. And while the band may have been "left", you may be surprised to hear what some of Jerry's views were, he was more conservative than many think. But I'm not trying to change your opinion, as I respect it. Just pointing out that we are all in this together. At shows were hippie pukes, middle class mothers, doctors, criminals, druggies, dogs, lawyers and miscreants. What was common was appreciation of an intangible, I cannot explain it. Black licorice. Hate it or love it. Good ole' Grateful Dead.

Very Greatfull that he's dead. ~~~~~~~~~ Little opinionated? Dang. Did you know Jerry joined the Army. Did you know they have zero protest songs and in fact while others were writing about being the first son to come home in a box on yer block, the good old Grateful Dead was writing songs like US Blues (wave that flag, wave it wide and high). among other pro American folk tunes aplenty. Music is entirely based on peoples individual opinions of each piece or artist. Just a friendly reminder that others might not care for the music you might thoroughly enjoy but most will refrain from saying they are glad some POS is dead. I too felt heavy sadness at the passing of Jerry, just like a family member. It changed my life because no more spring tour. I still follow the Other Ones every now and then but...... as for giving money to them, I enjoy music more frequently than firearms and like a tune regardless of artists political leanings, if they are just to active and use their popularity for anti gun issues then I go out of my way to let others know about their agendas here in America. Such as the band called U2, which I made a sign and went to the show, stood outside and talked to folks about a band that has no US citizenship trying to dictate our laws to us. I was asked to move, then knocked down when I started to debate the legality of me being in a public place etc...... I spend plenty of cash on firearms and related entities that support the 2nd ammend and regularly try and get new and old shooters shooting on a regular basis. I wouldnt have been this in depth but the statement of 'glad he is dead' directed at me will get a response from me every time. Little bit on the uncool side, ya know? Now take a deep breath and relax, things are looking up. No time to hate, barely time to wait.[:)]

"Hippies" and "white trash" are two entirely different species of subhumans. No such thing as "hippie white trash". Marijuana is to hippie, as Marlboro is to white trash. VW beetle is to hippie, as Chevy Cutlass is to white trash. Gratefull dead is to hippie, as WWF is to white trash. Commune is to hippie, as trailer park is to white trash.

Should we have been in Vietnam, of course. Did it require a half million men? No. It took the Brits 16 years to defeat the Communists in Malaya, but they did win and they never had more than 50,000 men comitted at any one time. Johnson and McNamara lost us that war. Period. They were incompitent. That is all there was to it. Inspite of them Nixon ALMOST regained it. Easter 1972 was the Norths last throw. But then Nixon got himself in trouble through his own stupidity of another sort, and the Congress was allowed to cut ALL funds for Vietnam in 1973. The 1975 offensive would NEVER of happened if they hadn't cut the funding and not allowed the US to support the Vietnamese government in ANY fashon. The Russians had already told the North in 1971 that they were through funding them if the Easter Offensive failed. The Paris Peace talks that followed were tantimount to a North Vietnamese surrender. The actions of OUR Congress in 1973 directly led to the 1975 invasion of the South, the Russians would not have fronted the North the arms and equipment and fuel for a third try.

I can't believe some of you people actually felt like a family member had passed the day Jerry Garcia died. Did you change you're tampons that day as well? Get over it! He was a musician, and not even a great one at that! There are much more talented musicians playing the same music. The Grateful Dead were nothing but an image. And a pretty disgusting one at that. Say what you want about there being lawyers and such at their shows. Their fans basicly fell into a couple categories: 1.Middle class yuppies trying to seem like they haven't sold out entirely. 2. Filthy vagabonds scumming drugs, food, shelter off of people who don't want to seem uncool. 3. Stupid college kids trying to live someting they were never a part of. 4. Bums 5. And Rich314 Sorry if this is an image I find sad. Say what you want about the Grateful Dead though, they were great at marketing. I mean they made hundreds of millions of dollars off off a hippy image, charging high dollar ticket prices to a cult of idiots following them around for 30 years. They were about as yuppie as it comes. I'd have to say, those boys did make it rich off that whole peace and love thing. I bet Jerry laughed all the way to the bank. He certainly wasn't doing it for the kids.

Not all "hippies" did that. That was largely the Berkley set, Kali hippies who have always been very liberal. Here in Tennessee even hippies didn't dare put down the troops themselves, they just didn't think we should have been there. My parents were hippies, but my dad never burned his draft card or anything and always said he would go if his number came up, because it was his duty to his country. I have two uncles who were over there so my mother damned sure wasn't putting down the troops.

You guys are not following me. This is not about Jerry Garcia, the Grateful Dead, or weather Vietman was right or wrong. This is about the insurgents who embraced the whole hippie idea, ran off to Congress, and imposed their racidal lifestyle on a nation that has been more sucessful than any other nation. Why would anyone in their right mind want to tear that down though the use of social programs unless they were a socialist themselves.

Damn, I can't beelieve I am so late getting to this thread. As a 28 year old Gen X'er( I f@#kin' hate that term, but ya gotta be pigeon-holed somewhere) I agree with the essence of the argument Gunsnob is making. Popular "hippy/classic rock" culture is ruining America. John Lennon(Lenin?) could have been the Voice of KOMY "commie radio, propaganda 24/7". Imagine there's no possessions, it's easy if yer an ex beatle worth a bazillion dollars. Imagine there's only sky above us (what's it like John?).This is a guy that's not just adored, but WORSHIPPED by people without enough sense to think for themselves, not all of them, but obviously enough! And holy shit the victim mentality. Bob Marley has suburban white kids singin along, Redemption Song. It's seeping into the newer music , too. Creed singin " Affirmative may be justified take from one give to another"(there's your redistibution of wealth again) and the angry Mexicans of Rage against the Machine. They have even screwed up coffee. COFFEE! ALL I WANT IS A GODDAM COFFEE WITH CREAM AND SUGAR! NOT MOCHALATTEFRAPPESPECIALBLENDDARKROASTCARAMELESPRESSO!JUST A GODDAM COFFEE! For those of you who are older, you gotta remember, we lived under the fear of mushroom clouds and invading Soviet Armies, too, but for us there was no Free-Love and LSD. We got crack and AIDS as escapes. I think I need some coffee, I am gonna blow a gasket. Gotta relax....

Here's a little more history for ya before you paint every 60's protester with the same brush. May 4, 1970 - 4 college students were SHOT DEAD by the Ohio National Guard at Kent State University. Their crime? They were protesting the war. May 4, 1971. The New York Times began publishing excerpts from a 7,100 page study titled "The History of the US Decision Making Process on Vietnam". Most people know it as the "Pentagon Papers". What the Times articles basicall revaled was the Administration lied about our involvement in Vietnam. Nixon got an injunction stopping the Times. Then the Washington Post started publishing these. Nixon tried to stop the truth from being published. Supreme court finally said they could be published. Hundreds of thousands of us were Drafted 46,370 Americans died in this war during this was, which ran 15 years. About 300,000 were wounded. Do you think a handful of 'hippies' were the only ones opposed to this war?

Your picture of Hitlary reminds me of something Dad once told me. There is an expression in French that translates, "(so) ugly as to cause fear." Seamusmcoi said "say what you will about the Grateful Dead." Ok, I will. I never liked their hypnotic, tuneless music. Someone told me once that you have to be high to understand their music. Apparently. -------- I work for Confuse A Cat.

No, the gloves needed to come off and we should have been allowed to fight unconditional war. Then we would have won. The North Vietnamese, according to some North Vietnamese generals, were ready to give up in 1968, but the likes of Jane Fonda and Tom Hayden gave them the fortitude to continue. They saw that Fonda, et al, were successful in creating a movement against our involvement and decided they could outlast us. That combined with the bombing halts, restricted targets, rules of engagement, etc allowed them to persevere long enough that the U.S. finally gave up. If we had gone in and fought all out from the beginning, it would not have lasted nearly as long and we would not have lost. I did the hippie scene in the late '60's, but went when my country called, so Gunsnob, don't overgeneralize. Hell, it was fun, just the women alone, never mind the pot, anyone would have loved it. Women then didn't play the stupid games women played before then and since then. They wanted the sex as much as men and admitted. They weren't nearly as uptight as women now. Hell, some so called 'hippy' girls even dug military guys. In the words of one 'flower child' I met after going in, 'I never did a sailor before'. Besides, being a 'hippy' in the '60's was a natural progression. Some famous person, I think Churchill but am not sure, once said 'If you are not a liberal when you are young you have no heart and if you are not a conservative when you grow older, you have no brain'.
