Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - 5.56 ammo question

I saw this guy at the fun show yesterday selling ammo that he claimed was U.S. manufacture.

The headstamp was at 12:00- H1 and at 6:00- 556. It was packed in 40 round cardboard boxes and 1981 was the date of manufacture.

What is the story behind this stuff? Is it SS109? I was going to buy some so I don't have to hear the guy next door complaining about me shooting Wolf through his AR that triggers his usual rant that I should buy a "real" gun.

That ammo is for our fine police and military and you do not need it. If protection is needed simply dial 911.

Owners of firearms that do not chamber the abovementioned ammunition need not be concerned.
