I give up using mine when i got a ticket from a trooper using a radar detector detector!

What an ass!

I'm not sure they are really worth it anymore.  Most of the new radar detectors are using laser or something which goes on/off fast.  I think there was a thread about this a few weeks ago.

Just drive the speed limit or go with the flow if everyone is speeding.

...has some good reviews.  They go into the technical side of how the whole radar trap thing works as well.  Especially interesting is their claim that for now Ka radar is far more dangerous than "laser".

Laser guns are the new standard for speed measurement.  You'd need either some sort of automatically triggered dazzler (not worth it for a simple traffic violation) or IR jammer (illegal and hard to come by) to prevent a laser operator from getting a reading on you.  In my experience detectors which purport to detect lasers or detector detectors etc are full of it.  Laser beam spread nullifies most laser detection claims if the laser is aimed at the licence plate - a common practice.  And it has been my experience that the detectors which purport to detect the VG-2 detector detectors, don't.

If you want the best then go for a Valentine One http://www.valentine1.com.

valentine one is the only way to go.  I have had one since they first came out.  Have had it upgraded twice and laser added to it.  The best by far.  Nothing will beat instant on radar, just don't fly when its only you on the road.  Haven't gotten a speeding ticket with the radar detector, and I don't drive slow.

The best Radar Detector you can buy is a CB radio on Channel 19!  The truckers will tell you where every bear is!  Again....nothing is fool proof, but the truckers know best!  Believe me!

Now wait a minute. When I bought my latest Porsche I thought about using the Escort Solo II ($109)that I use in my other 911 but decided to leave it alone for when I drove that car and bought a Valentine One for the new 996. After a month of using the Valentine One I got two tickets, two more than I had gotten in twelve years, two more than I had ever gotten with either of the Solos I have used. I ditched the Valentine One and jerked the Solo out of the old 911 and put it in the new one. Not a single problem and I wasted four hundred bucks not to mention the cost of tickets and raise in my insurance premiums.

V1 is nice but overpriced at U$400.  Technology is over ten years old too.
Get an Escort 8500,
a good CB radio and
a box of Donuts.
You'll have change left over to feed the meter in front of the Traffic Court building.

I use a CB and the Valentine 1 (V1).  That is a pretty good combination.

The Escort 8500 and the Valentine 1 are pretty much head to head in forward sensitivity.  The V1 pulls ahead with the rear antenna and radar locator.  I can't use a radar detector that doesn't tell me the location of the radar anymore.

To say that the V1 is 10 year old technology is to forget that it is reprogrammable and upgradeable.  I luv my V1.

Magic is right on the money.  I love the directional display of the V1.  The situational awareness level just skyrockets with that thing.  With it a radar contact isn't just a squawk, you can track it's progress visually.  Sometimes the first indication I get is a K band pulse from behind because a trooper is coming up a hill ahead and his radar is bouncing off a hill behind me.  I have never gotten a speeding ticket without it (and will be bringing it along when I rent cars from now on too [:(]).

the best radar detector is your eyes ,watch the traffic ahead of you for break lights and slow down .I've used many radar detectors and they all work about the same .I prefer a P1SC procharger to avoid tickets in my  85 GT mustang.put the pedal to the medal and get off on first exit and go shopping in store for half hour while cop is racing down freeway trying to find you .Just make sure he never got close to read your license plate.also if the cop was going the opposite direction when he clocked you don't slow down keep speeding ,you might as well make it hard for him to catch up to you as you are'nt doing anytrhing wrong till he is behind you when you .
