Leonid Meteor Storm

Don't forget, wake up early tomorrow and go outside and checkout the show. I'll probably get up around 3am or maybe 4am and check it out.

This is one time I wish I was out west in Nevada or Arizona with clear dark skies. Northern va sucks with light pollution. I should have driven to the Shenandoah and camped out. doh.

From Sky and Telescope "The Leonids, which are one of a dozen or so annual meteor showers caused by streams of cometary debris, arrive at a blistering 44 miles (71 kilometers) per second – the fastest known."

In 1966 lucky observers in the southwestern United States gaped in awe for 20 minutes as Leonid meteors fell at the rate of 40 per second!

I will be out also. I heard the meteor showers would peak around 3:30 - 4:30

that is 0100-0300 (1:00AM-3:00AM in washington state and on the west coast) when they are suppose to happen

I have been trying to see a meteor storm since we moved out here. Every time they say there is going to be a good one, the damn clouds move in and block the whole sky.
Tonight, there are no clouds, no moon, and, Lord willing, there is no way I am going to miss this one.
It should be good.

When they are at max on the east coast, they are at max everywhere. Just different times according to our watches.

So, if the max time is 5am on the east coast, it is 2am on the west coast.

Time to zzzz...

The wife and I had planned on staying up tonight to catch the shower, but it's so cloudy here you can't even see the moon or clouds. [:(]

Make sure you use a high power telescope. You get a great view of them then. Sometimes you can even see their nametags...

Seen quite a few good ones in the last 15 min, I'm on Marco Isalnd right now at my parrents house, this is a good place to view this. I remember seeing a few of these a night as teenager, but not as brilliant or frequent as tonight.

HEHEHE....I'm gettin paid to watch them! I have to be onsite throughout the storm so that if any of my satellites get hit, we can tell the insurance company that we had enginner support for the storm, and in the case of a collision, we can wave good-bye to the spacecraft in person.. The chances of getting hit are so small, that it's stupid to have extra people on hand, but what the hell? I'll stick around and watch the show. Now where did I put that coffee mug??

The show was badass. Some were pretty damm bright. Best show I've seen all year. Well, the Galapagos IMAX was cool too.

Saw quite a few. Maybe 2-300 per hour. It finally cleared up around 4:30am here in Florida.

While on patrol last night the East Ohio fog was as thick as London's. My partner and I made it to a clear mountaintop in the SW part of the county by about 5:10AM and got a great show. Most were moving from SW to NE. A few were even bright enough to see through the fog.

You were suppose to get up at 2a PST(5a EST). If stood there for a few minutes, and just look up into the sky you should see some. But I think you may have been an hour too early, was those times EST or PST time?

At midnight
I saw the brightest
and longest lasting
ones 180 degrees
from Orion and low on the horizon.

At 4 AM
they were everywhere.

If I remember correctly they sometimes last 2 days. But the major time was this morning. You can try again tonight but I don't think you will see many.

The area of the sky is Leo, hence the name Leonoid. I think I saw some from Orion too (on tv)

Looked up at Leo this morning a few minutes before I left for work and saw 2 meteors and a satellite zip by (in a 4 minute timeframe.) Guess that is better than nothing.
