I am surprised to see no-one (that I am aware of) makes a barrell for this caliber.. in light of the cheap surplus ammo available right now... The total dimensions of the cartridge look fairly close..would the std 5.56 mags feed??

How long do you suppose cheap surplus will be around for? I'm assuming not very long, to be honest. Secondly, wasn't there already an upper in 5.45? I think it was called .21 Genghis or something like that.

Do you think the reason the ammo is cheap has something to do with the low demand? As if there are only a few rifles that can use it?

A bolt from a 7.62 x 39 will work but the caliber is a bit less than .2245" so the barrels are hard to find.

Got it?

I believe somebody does make a 5.45mm upper, I just can seem to think of who. The cheap surplus is corrosive so it would be a bit more cleanup required in an AR.

I doubt you could find an upper for less than $450 with the correct bolt face for 5.45mm. For that price you could buy a complete semi-AK-74 clone which gives you a complete "other" rifle.

Alexander Arms used to make a 5.45 upper a few years ago and sold it as the ".21 Genghis". Unfortunately, it was on the market when the only ammo available was new production Wolf, so it flopped and they don't offer it any more. Miracle of timing...

wana dump $500 + on a upper for an ammo source thats VERY limited.

"OH LOOK CHEAP SURPLUS AMMO BUY BUY BUY!!!!"

yeah , right NOW. 6 months or a year from now, wont be the case. I remember paying almost 40 cents a round for 5.45 when it dried up before the Russian and Bulgarian loads came in.

Buy the caliber you plan on keeping for a long time, but dont be so cheap in the short term you dump half a $K on a new upper to shoot 20year old corrosive ammo in an AR or XCR, thats silly. Leave the 5.45 to the AK74s.

Or buy 3,300 rounds of 5.45x39 for the cost of 1,000 rounds of 5.56

Let's see. 1,100 rounds of 5.45 goes for like $120

9 cases would be nearly 10,000 rounds... for around $1,100

10,000 rounds of 5.56 would be around $3,500

Think $2,400 in savings might justify buying the upper if you shoot a lot?

And I bought mine like 5 years ago

Slight thread hijack.

Is there a big difference between the 5.56NATO & the 5.45x39 cartridge? Should I trade my AR in for a AK74 clone & some cash?

Get both!

Similar cartridges, but some differences... designed with the same concept in mind.

I already have an AK-74... I just thought it would be cool to have an AR upper in the same caliber.. I constantly see rants about "remember the day when" regarding ammo prices... yea... I do..thats why my motto on ammo is
"Whore today, cause it will cost you more tommorrow"

I had one, hardly used it -- sold it here on EE and have regretted it ever since.

A post on Calguns.net said Alexander Arms was reported at shot show 2008 to be bringing back the 5.45 upper. Found it on the internet so it must be true. :)

ETA: A quick look on their website does not show it yet.
