I recall (incorrectly, perhaps) that George Will used to have a "disarm the peasants for their own good" attitude about the right to keep and bear arms.  His most recent column came as a pleasant surprise:

Widespread possession of guns is justified by considerations of public safety, individual dignity and healthy democracy. Public safety because law enforcement personnel can never be numerous enough to guarantee safety. (Remember this test: Call for a cop, an ambulance and a pizza. Which will get there first?) Personal dignity implies, among much else, readiness for self-defense. And the health of democratic culture is implicated in the general public’s involvement in public safety. This is so because freedom is not a gift from government, and defending it is not a duty that properly responsible citizens will entirely delegate to government.

George has been reconsidering his stance for quite a while.  In November of '93 he wrote a column in response to Jeff Snyder's "A Nation of Cowards".  You can read it at http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Bridge/2431/will.html  It made him reconsider his anti-gun position.

Apparently since 1993 he's come most of the way around - especially after reading the Emererson decision.  Good for George.  I always thought he had a good head on his shoulders.

Good for him. We can always use more of us. Now, who the hell is he?

George F. Will - conservative (generally) political pundit, publishes a syndicated column in numerous papers, often seen on Sunday political/news shows (Face the Nation, etc.), usually wears a bow tie.  At one point he came out in favor of a gun ban (pre-'90?) but has since rethought his position.  Pretty clear thinker, good writer.

Regardless of where he was in the past, if he is now pro rights, I welcome him into the fold.

I must say that he is one hell of a writer.  Both articles are wonderful and it is nice to see him finally, through reason and a healthy dose of Sept 11. reality, finally see the light.
