sgt,
In the PRK, you cannot buy Bulgarian Maks, as they are not C&R. The only C&R mags are the East German (the best of all of them) and the original military (fixed rear site) Russian (not the commercial Russian with the big ugly adjustable rear sight).
The East German Maks will run you about $200 locally. Antioch Armory has them or can get them for you. They have the best triggers by far, and better overall, due to precision German machining and metalwork. Russian ones aren't as good, but are more rare, and will cost more.
Any 8-round Mak mag will work. By them used for $3 from www.makarov.com. Maks will eat lacquered steel-cased ammo all day long and not complain, as they were designed to. Barnaul makes hollowpoints as well as FMJ, and Wolf (Tula) makes FMJ. About $125/1000 delivered. Possibly cheaper from Miwall at the Cow Palace show.
Maks are BLOWBACK, meaning the barrel and slide don't lock together, and only the spring retards the slide. Like any blowback design, recoil is higher than with Browning-style locked-breech guns. The larger rubber Pearce grips make it much more comfortable.
Do NOT attempt to use 9mm Luger (9x19mm) ammo. 9mm Mak is actually 9.2x18mm, but with the same size case head as 9mm Luger because the case is straight-walled instead of tapered. You can cut down 9mm Luger brass 1mm and load 9mm Mak, but it's a lot of work, and Mak brass is available from www.starlinebrass.com, though I recommend sticking with the Russian steel-cased stuff due to cost.
